My mind has never clung to you as, abandoning all pretense, it naturally remains continually attached to sense objects. (1) As I gaze at another’s wife and hear the sinful intrigues of house after house, I do not gaze upon saints or hear the hosts of Raghubara’s virtues, pure as the Ganga’s waves. (2) As the nose is ruled by fragrant essence and the tongue delights in six flavors, they have never longed and yearned for the garland offered to Rama and the remnants of his grace-food. (3) As this base body desires the touch of sandalwood, moon-faced woman, ornaments, and cloth, this sinful body has not yearned for the touch of Raghupati’s lotus feet. (4) As I have served evil gods and wicked masters in every way with body, speech, and heart, I have not served Rama, who is grateful and grows bashful when one bows even once. (5) Driven by greed, these restless, craving feet have run door to door through the world; yet, luckless, they have never wearied from walking to the holy dwellings of Rama and Sita. (6) Lord, every limb is turned away from your feet; only my mouth has taken shelter in the Name. Tulsi has this one conviction: the Lord’s form is made of compassion. (7)
