Cast me into Yama’s torments. Rama, fool that I am, I turned my back upon a master as pure and benevolent as you. (1) During ten months in the womb, you cared for me like father and mother and did me good. To me, dull, you gave discernment; to me, wicked, gracious character; to me, an offender, honor. (2) I practice deceit even with the indwelling knower and hide my sins from the all-pervading Lord. Even toward such a false-minded, bad servant, Raghupati did not turn his heart adverse. (3) I fill my belly by calling myself your servant, yet have sold my heart into the hands of sense objects. Even toward a cheat like me, compassionate Lord, you abandoned guile and showed tenderness. (4) Though I have fully known, understood, and heard your benefits at every moment, my heart, harder than a thunderbolt, has never been pierced by love for Sita’s beloved. (5) I placed all the Master’s care for his servant on one side of understanding’s scale and my own little treachery toward the Master on the other; my side proved heavier. (6) Even so, Lord, you keep doing me good—you have done so and will do so. Tulsi knows from his own side that the Lord will sustain one so laden with debt. (7)
