Such is Rama, benefactor of the poor: exceedingly tender, treasury of compassion, benefactor of others without cause. (1) The sage’s wife, helpless, poor, and subject to her own sin, became stone. Going from your home, you touched her with your holy foot and delivered her from the terrible curse. (2) The Nishada, devoted to violence, with a tamasic body, roamed the forest like a beast. Overcome by love, you met him and clasped him to your heart without considering lineage or caste. (3) Though the lord of the gods’ son committed an indescribably grave offense, after looking through every world he came grieving for refuge, and you removed his fear. (4) Born a bird and feeding on flesh, what vow had the vulture observed? With your own hands you arranged every rite for him as for a father. (5) Shabari was a dull woman of degraded caste, outside both society and Veda. Recognizing her love, the treasury of compassion gave her sight of himself, and Raghunatha delivered her too. (6) The monkey Sugriva, distraught by fear of his brother, came crying for refuge. Unable to bear his servant’s terrible pain, you killed Bali even while enduring reproach. (7) Vibhishana was the enemy’s younger brother and a night-roamer—what claim had he to worship? When he came for refuge, you advanced to receive him and embraced him with outstretched arms. (8) Those deformed monkeys and bears whose very remembrance was considered inauspicious—you made them all holy, as the Veda attests. Lord, this is your greatness. (9) How long can I recount the countless poor whose calamities you removed? Why have you forgotten grace toward servant Tulsi, seized by Kali’s impurity? (10)
