With what face can I speak, Raghubira, Master? By the Master’s honor, when I consider all I have done, I shrink in shame. (1) Through service you come under one’s sway, through remembrance you become a friend, and to one seeking refuge you become present; yet I do not set my heart upon Sitanatha’s hosts of virtues. (2) You are an ocean of compassion, friend of the poor, benefactor of the distressed, and guardian of the surrendered. Hearing and knowing this garland of your renown, I forgot it. (3) I neither served nor meditated, nor through remembrance perfected love for your feet. Having gained Rama as such an excellent master, I quarreled with him to my heart’s content. (4) The Lord is gracious to the poor, but I did not embrace poverty of spirit. Therefore, Lord, act from your own side and do whatever you can for Tulsi. (5)
