Ocean of compassion, therefore I remain heartsick night and day. Maharaja, one exposes one’s own thigh only at the cost of one’s own shame. (1) My companions beginning with lust stay close, yet wish to kill me. They cannot live without me, yet deceitfully burn my very breast. (2) Knowing that they dwell in my heart, I lovingly satisfied the desire of every one of them. These dull, crooked deeds made me the stick in a puppeteer’s hand. (3) Until today I had neither seen nor heard of such intimacy: they do everything themselves, yet every wrong falls upon my head. (4) They appear deeply unjust, yet I cannot abandon them. I am submerged in perplexity; take hold of my arm. (5) I implore you: just once look upon this spectacle in your servant’s heart. Tulsidas’s affliction will effortlessly disappear. (6)
