This much I seem to understand, Lord of Raghu: without your grace, compassionate friend of servants, the delusion of maya does not release one. (1) No one, however expert in verbal knowledge, reaches beyond becoming. Talking about a lamp inside a house at night does not dispel the darkness. (2) A poor, terribly distressed person suffers for lack of food; pictures of a wish-granting tree and cow drawn in his house do not end his adversity. (3) Someone may describe foods of all six flavors in many ways by day and night; only the one who eats knows, without words, the joy born of satisfaction. (4) Until light arises in one’s own heart and hope for sense-objects leaves the mind, Tulsidas says one wanders through the world’s wombs and finds no happiness even in a dream. (5)
