मैं हरि, साधन करइ न जानी। जस आमय भेषज न कीन्ह तस, दोष कहा दिरमानी॥ १॥ सपने नृप कहँ घटे बिप्र-बध, निकल फिरै अघ लागे। बाजिमेध सत कोटि करै नहिं सुद्ध होइ बिनु जागे॥ २॥ स्त्रग महँ सर्प बिपुल भयदायक, प्रगट होइ अबिचारे। बहु आयुध धरि, बल अनेक करि हारहिं, मरइ न मारे॥ ३॥ निज भ्रम ते रबिकर-सम्भव सागर अति भय उपजावै। अवगाहत बोहित नौका चढ़ि कबहुँ पार न पावै॥ ४॥ तुलसिदास जग आपु सहित जब लगि निरमूल न जाई। तब लगि कोटि कलप उपाय करि मरिय, तरिय नहिं भाई॥ ५॥

Hari, I do not know how to practice spiritual means. If a remedy is not applied according to the disease, how can one blame the physician? (1) In a dream a king commits brahmin-murder and wanders away stained by the sin. Though he perform a hundred million horse sacrifices, he is not purified without waking. (2) Through failure to examine, a greatly terrifying snake appears in a garland. People take up many weapons and exert great force until exhausted, yet it does not die when struck. (3) From one’s own delusion, water born of the sun’s rays appears as an ocean and produces immense fear. One enters it and boards a ship, yet never reaches the far shore. (4) Tulsidas says: until the world, together with the separate self, is uprooted, one may exhaust oneself applying remedies for millions of aeons but cannot cross, brother. (5)
