Madhava, none is so base as I. Fish and moth may be witless, yet even they do not equal me. (1) Enslaved by pleasing food and beautiful form, they did not recognize hook and fire. I see disaster and still do not abandon sense-objects; therefore I am more foolish than they. (2) In the boundless river of great delusion I am forever swept around. Abandoning the boat of glorious Hari’s lotus feet, again and again I grasp at foam. (3) I am like an extremely hungry dog that fills its mouth with an old bone, drinks the blood from its own palate, and takes satisfaction in its mind. (4) Seized by the most terrible serpent of becoming, I am dreadfully terrified; yet like a frog seeking fearlessness, I seek refuge while forgetting the Lord of the king of birds. (5) A shoal of fish, enclosed in a net, becomes crowded together on one side; ruled by greed, each eats another and does not see its own destruction. (6) For many ages Sharada could count my sins and never reach their end. Tulsidas says one assurance arises in my heart: the Lord is the purifier of the fallen. (7)
