World-renowned Lord of the world, dwelling and boundary of the world, riding the serpent’s foe; Brahman, boon-giving Lord, master of speech, all-pervading, stainless, vast, mighty and Lord of liberation. (1) Nature, the great principle, qualities beginning with sound, gods, space, wind, fire, pure water and earth; intellect, mind, senses, breath, consciousness and self, time, atom and mighty conscious power— (2) All this is indeed your form, jewel among kings: manifest and unmanifest, difference gone, O Vishnu. Worlds are your limbs; your paired feet, praised by desire’s foe, give birth to Mandakini, O victor. (3) You are beginning, middle and end, Lord; you are the all-pervading ruler whom speakers of Brahman see everywhere—as thread in cloth, clay in pot, garland mistaken for snake, wood in elephant and gold in bracelet and armlet. (4) Hidden, deep, destroyer of pride, knower of secret meaning, concealed, beyond senses, teacher and knower of knowledge; the knowable, lover of knowledge, abundant store of gravity, beyond dreadful becoming and giver of the farther shore. (5) Whose resolve is truth, beyond ages, maker of the age’s end, beyond imagining, resting on the serpent couch; lotus-eyed, lotus-naveled, cloud-bodied, mass of the beauty of ten million monkey-bannered Loves. (6) Easy and difficult, hard to worship, remover of vice, inaccessible, unassailable, remover of suffering in difficulty; he extinguishes the pride in higher and lower knowledge of Brahma’s sons. (7) Favorable to devotees, uprooter of becoming’s thorn, whose name is fire to cotton-like sin; sun against the night of restless thirst, bearer of earth, remover of refuge-seekers’ fear and treasury of compassion. (8) Hosts of gods bow to your paired feet, while you wear a mandara garland on your chest. Ravana’s foe, your servant Tulsi bows, forever crowded with anguish; Lord, protect me. (9)
