देव— भानुकुल-कमल-रवि, कोटि-कंदर्प-छवि, काल-कलि-व्यालमिव वैनतेयं। प्रबल भुजदंड परचंड-कोदंड-धर तूणवर विशिख बलमप्रमेयं॥ १॥ अरुण राजीवदल-नयन, सुषमा-अयन, श्याम तन-कांति वर वारिदाभं। तप्त कांचन-वस्त्र, शस्त्र-विद्या-निपुण, सिद्ध-सुर-सेव्य, पाथोजनाभं॥ २॥ अखिल लावण्य-गृह, विश्व-विग्रह, परम प्रौढ़, गुणगूढ़, महिमा उदारं। दुर्धर्ष, दुस्तर, दुर्ग, स्वर्ग-अपवर्ग-पति, भग्न संसार-पादप कुठारं॥ ३॥ शापवश मुनिवधू-मुक्तकृत, विप्रहित, यज्ञ-रक्षण-दक्ष, पक्षकर्ता। जनक-नृप-सदसि शिवचाप-भंजन, उग्र भार्गवागर्व-गरिमापहर्ता॥ ४॥ गुरु-गिरा-गौरवामर-सुदुस्त्यज राज्य त्यक्त, श्रीसहित सौमित्रि-भ्राता। संग जनकात्मजा, मनुजमनुसृत्य अज, दुष्ट-वध-निरत, त्रैलोक्यत्राता॥ ५॥ दंडकारण्य कृतपुण्य पावन चरण, हरण मारीच-मायाकुरंगं। बालि बलमत्त गजराज इव केसरी, सुहृद-सुग्रीव-दुख-राशि-भंगं॥ ६॥ ऋक्ष, मर्कट विकट सुभट उद्भट समर, शैल-संकाश रिपु त्रासकारी। बद्धपाथोधि, सुर-निकर-मोचन, सकुल दलन दससीस-भुजबीस भारी॥ ७॥ दुष्ट विबुधारि-संघात, अपहरण महि-भार, अवतार कारण अनूपं। अमल, अनवद्य, अद्वैत, निर्गुण, सगुण, ब्रह्म सुमिरामि नरभूप-रूपं॥ ८॥ शेष-श्रुति-शारदा-शंभु-नारद-सनक गनत गुन अंत नहिं तव चरित्रं। सोइ राम कामारि-प्रिय अवधपति सर्वदा दासतुलसी-त्रास-निधि बहित्रं॥ ९॥
Lord—sun to the lotus of the solar race, beautiful as ten million Loves, Garuda to the serpent of death and Kali; in mighty arms he bears fierce Kodanda, an excellent quiver and arrows, his strength immeasurable. (1) His eyes are petals of a crimson lotus, he is beauty’s abode, and his dark body shines like a noble raincloud. He wears cloth of molten gold, is expert in weapon-lore, served by Siddhas and gods, and lotus-naveled. (2) Dwelling of all beauty and embodiment of the universe, supremely mature, his virtues mysterious and glory vast; unassailable, unfathomable and hard to know, lord of heaven and liberation, he is an axe breaking the tree of becoming. (3) He freed the sage’s wife bound by a curse, worked for Brahmins’ good, skillfully protected the sacrifice and upheld his devotees; in King Janaka’s assembly he broke Shiva’s bow and removed fierce Bhargava’s weighty pride. (4) Honoring his teacher’s word, he abandoned a kingdom hard even for immortals to renounce, with glorious brother Lakshmana and Janaka’s daughter beside him; the unborn one followed human ways, intent on killing the wicked and protecting the three worlds. (5) His purifying feet blessed Dandaka forest and destroyed Maricha, the illusory deer. He was a lion to Bali, elephant drunk on strength, and broke the mass of grief of his friend Sugriva. (6) Bear and monkey warriors, formidable heroes fierce in battle and mountain-like, terrified the enemy. He bridged the ocean, freed the hosts of gods and destroyed mighty ten-headed, twenty-armed Ravana with his whole clan. (7) The peerless cause of his incarnation was destroying hosts of wicked enemies of the gods and removing earth’s burden. I remember stainless, faultless, nondual, attributeless and attributed Brahman in the form of the human king. (8) Shesha, Veda, Sharada, Shambhu, Narada and Sanaka count your virtues, yet find no end to your deeds. That Rama, beloved of desire’s foe and Lord of Ayodhya, is forever a boat for servant Tulsi’s ocean of fear. (9)
