Lord—Vishnu is fire to the demon forest, deep in virtues, Govinda, immortal giver of joy to Nanda and the rest. Shiva is Shambhu, Shiva, Rudra and Shankara, formidable, tremendous, terrible, an abode of splendor and a mass of wrath. (1) Vishnu is infinite, the Lord who ends the world, stills death’s terror, Lakshmi’s beloved and delight of the worlds. Shiva is king of the mountain, Lord of the world, Ishana, mass of realization and abode of knowledge and liberation. (2) Vishnu is Vamana, unmanifest, pure, Lord of near and far, manifest supreme Self and master of nature. Shiva bears the moon and trident, destroys, is sinless, unborn, measureless and unbroken, and rides the lordly bull. (3) Vishnu’s body is dark as a blue cloud, lovely as many Loves; Rama is lotus-eyed and compassionate. Shiva’s body is white as conch and camphor, stainless, bearing matted hair, the celestial river and a garland of white flowers. (4) Vishnu wears lotus-pollen yellow, bearing discus, Sharnga, conch, lotus and immense Kaumodaki. Shiva is the lion against desire’s rutting elephant, three-eyed destroyer; I bow to him who takes away the world’s net. (5) Vishnu is Krishna, dwelling of compassion, tamer of wicked Kaliya and exterminator of Kamsa and many others. Shiva shatters Tripura’s pride, wears an elephant hide and is Garuda swallowing the serpent Andhaka. (6) Vishnu is Brahman, all-pervading, partless yet all, transcendent, highest good, knowledge, beyond the senses and remover of the movements of qualities. Shiva is the thunderbolt to Jalandhara’s mountain of pride, Gauri’s Lord, source of becoming and destroyer of Daksha’s entire sacrifice. (7) Vishnu loves devotion, is the devotees’ wish-giving cow and Hari who removes immense, dreadful calamity. Shiva gives joy, delight and boons, is stainless and faultless, and wanders the lanes of the bliss-grove Kashi. (8) This lovely garland of Hari-Shankara name-mantras removes the pain of dualities, is a mine of bliss and forever a stairway to Vishnu’s and Shiva’s worlds, Tulsidas says in clear speech. (9)
