Repeat Rama, repeat Rama, repeat Rama, repeat Rama, repeat Rama, foolish mind, again and again. Know in your heart that it is the mine of all fortune and joy; trust and utter the essence of the Veda. (1) The Lord of Kosala has a body like a fresh blue lotus and is a bee in the heart-lotus of Shiva, desire’s foe. Janaki’s beloved, dwelling of joy and sole Lord of the worlds, he destroys foes in battle and is supremely compassionate. (2) He is fire to the forest of demons, with strong arms reaching his knees, bearing noble Kodanda and fierce arrows. His hands, feet, face and lotus eyes are crimson; he is the abode of virtues and a treasury of the beauty of many Loves. (3) He is the sun to the night-lilies of gathered desires, frost to the lotus-grove of lust, anger and pride, and a lion to the greatly intoxicated elephant of greed; for devotees’ good he removes the world’s burden. (4) Keshava, destroyer of affliction, whose paired feet are worshipped by Brahma and Shiva and are the source of Mandakini; mass of perpetual bliss, remover of delusion and boat across the dreadful ocean of becoming. (5) He is wind against the bank of clouds of grief and doubt and hard thunderbolt against the mountain of sin. His peerless name is the saints’ wish-giving cow, granting rest and destroying Kali’s defilement. (6) The name is the garden of dharma’s wish-tree, provisions on the path to Hari’s abode, the one root of all. Many practices—devotion, dispassion, realization, tranquility, giving and restraint—depend upon the name. (7) Whoever, seeing this blameless age of death, drinks without cease the nectar of Shri Rama’s name has performed all austerity, sacrifice, giving and every web of prescribed action. (8) Outcastes, villains, Bhils, Yavanas and others reached Hari’s world through the name’s vast power, and stains did not touch their minds. Abandon all hope and fear; to cut becoming’s noose, repeat Hari’s name like a keen sword, servant Tulsi. (9)
