Victory to Rama, lotus-eyed king of kings, whose name is the wish-fulfilling tree of Kali’s age and who is rich in consolation; Agastya to the ocean of injustice and a fierce sun against the dense, dreadful darkness of demon hosts. (1) Victory to the lord of sages, gods and men, Dasharatha’s son, who made Ayodhya’s people worthy of reverence from gods and sages; ending the grief and distress of the chakva birds who are the world’s guardians, he makes the lotus-forest of the solar race bloom. (2) Victory to him whose body shines like a garland of blue lotuses in beauty’s lake, abode of virtues and benefactor of the world; his form, all fortune, beauty and supreme grace, humbles the pride of ten million Loves. (3) Victory to the bearer of lovely Sharnga, fine quiver, arrows and spear, fair shield and sword and excellent armor; steadfast bearer of dharma’s burden, Raghubira of incomparable arm-strength, who lightly crushed earth’s heavy burden. (4) Victory to him whose golden jeweled crown, earrings and lovely flash of tilak grace his forehead and whose moon-face shines; wearing divine ornaments, yellow robe and sacred thread—whoever meditated on him became a vessel of blessedness. (5) Victory to the beautiful one served by Bharata, Lakshmana and Shatrughna, giver of joy to ministers and servants and giver of all; he saves the lowest, afflicted, poor, fallen and sin-swollen who bow once and merely say, ‘Protect me.’ (6) Victory, victory to King Rama, whose meritorious fame shines throughout the fourteen worlds. His deed-river, sprung from the mountain of the foremost poet, is drunk and bathed in by rejoicing assemblies of saints. (7) Victory to the men and women devoted to their station and life-stage, endowed with truth, tranquility, restraint, compassion and giving; free of sorrow and fault, forever content and happy, they hear and sing the play of Rama’s reign. (8) Victory to the ocean of dispassion and realized knowledge, giver of joy to those who bow and remover of sin and pain. Vaidehi’s Lord, remover of doubt, your servant Tulsi takes refuge at your feet; give him support. (9)
