English Translation

My shrine is the true one; it belongs to no other. Its imprint stands across all three worlds and need not be erasededs no verification. Come, prostrate yourselves, offer some prayer; this deity will sweep away the ghosts of worldly existence. Those entangled in the tumult of sense-pleasures are seized by the three qualities, yet when the cry of Hari's name strikes their ears, they rise at once. Ego, lust, anger, and envy flee in a rush of love, abandoning all their strongholds. Maya and attachment, which had taken full shelter, all scatter together at the sight of the divine color. Says Tuka, offer your sincere devotion and every doubt in the mind will vanish; you need wander nowhere else.

We ask forgiveness for any inaccuracies in rendering Tukaram ji’s original Marathi.

In Plain Words

My shrine is the true one; it belongs to no one else. Its mark stands across all three worlds; you need not ask. Come, fall down full length, make your prayer. This deity will sweep the house clean and drive out the ghost of worldly life. Those who have fallen into the uproar of the senses are gripped by the three qualities. But when the cry of Hari's name strikes their ears, they rise at once. Ego, lust, anger, and envy flee in a rush of love, leaving every stronghold behind. Maya and the sense of mine, which had settled in firmly, all scatter together when they see the color of God. Tuka says: give your true faith, and the doubt in your mind will dissolve. You need wander nowhere else.

What it means

Tukaram describes what the Name actually does inside a person. The shrine he points to is the true one, recognizable everywhere, and the worship he asks for is plain prostration and prayer. The real exorcism is interior: the cry of Hari's name wakes those drugged by the senses, and the inner enemies, ego, lust, anger, envy, attachment, flee like routed squatters when the divine presence appears. The closing turn is the whole teaching: offer sincere faith and the mind's doubt clears, so there is no need to roam from shrine to shrine looking elsewhere.
