English Translation

If You are to act, then act truly. Give the gift of grace that You have already considered. You have never spoken against Your own resolve. You know what is merit and what is sin, O God. Your generous fame resounds throughout the world. Such is the banner of Your glory. Says Tuka, O husband of Rukmini, why do You now hold back from my plea?.

We ask forgiveness for any inaccuracies in rendering Tukaram ji’s original Marathi.

In Plain Words

If you mean to act, then act for real now. Give the gift of grace you have already decided to give. You have never broken your own resolve. You know what is merit and what is sin, O God. Your generous fame fills the whole earth. That is the banner of glory that thunders about you. Tuka says: O husband of Rukmini, why do you hold back from my plea now?

What it means

Tukaram presses God to make good on what He has already resolved to do. He asks that the promised grace actually arrive, not stay a half-finished intention, and reminds the Lord that He has never gone back on His own purpose and alone knows true merit from sin. Then he leans on God's reputation as a kind of leverage: the whole world proclaims His generosity, so withholding now would betray that banner. Addressing Him as the husband of Rukmini, Tukaram simply asks why such a famously generous Lord is resisting one man's request.
