Fresh English translation

The stanza from the preceding page concludes: bees, cuckoos, parrots, and peacocks call as the beloved desires; hearing that nectar, the forest birds and rasika contemplatives melt. (6) Each hair of the flute-bearing Cowherd is a celestial cow; truth, direct knowing, discriminating knowledge, rasa, devotion, and dharma rest upon him. In the city's center lies dark water marked like the jambu fruit. Some call it Virajā, but it has no beginning: it is the Lord's field of play. In sugandhā meter: (1) Jeweled and ruby steps make both banks flash, like countless moons and lightning shining beside a cloud. Many-colored lotuses bloom while bees hum, like good people dancing with choked voices as they worship Hari. (2) On that bank is the dense, excellent grove named Vṛndāvana, eternally bearing jeweled flowers, fruit, and leaves according to the Lord's desire. There the darling pair sport with crores of male and female companions; Rāmacaraṇa, enchanted by rasa, describes the bright colors they scatter. (3) Laughing beauties fling color upon dark Śyāma; the Lord laughs and sprays them back with syringes alongside his companions. Their translucent garments cling to their bodies, filled with color; the pure moon of bliss rises and the beloved enchants every heart. The page ends as the next stanza begins to describe the nose-ring, restless eyes, forehead mark, and celestial ornaments.
