Fresh English translation

The sentence begun on the preceding page continues: because the Lord placed the crest-jewel of the celestial cow upon its head, it grants the desired body without distinguishing king from pauper. (8) Brahmā's day may repeatedly end and the cosmic cow be destroyed, yet that great jewel is not destroyed; it veils the practitioner and drives away fear through accomplishment. (9) Know the cow-form as the body of the cosmic egg and the worlds in their order. The jeweled cow-gate at its head is understood through devotion's virtues. Its upward-facing bovine mouth utters the unstruck bellow; that very gate surpasses mind, speech, and action, as the great saints declare. (10) Whatever it does not accept, it vomits out and carries away. Rāmacaraṇa says the soul goes with sound through that cow-gate, the doorway to bliss. Up to that point the words of crores of sages speak in two modes, as a sage saying “not this” joins the pair while diminishing and augmenting them. In dohā: (1) A priceless jewel passes from shop to shop; minds name a price, but all remain ignorant of its true worth. One speaks, another enjoys, another presides; only the discerning knower possesses the truth. With falling tears and a choked voice, by what means could it be concealed? Thus ends the second section, the account of the indicatory teaching in the second station of the Bodha-śāstra.
