On Kailash, Shiva's form gleams with the whiteness of jasmine and the autumn moon. Snow peaks rise around him, yet their brilliance does not equal the quiet radiance of the Lord seated beside Uma. Power and tenderness meet without conflict in that high stillness.
He is the conqueror of Kama, before whose opened eye desire itself became ash. Yet no hardness follows that victory. He is an unfailing refuge of compassion, and his love bends most readily toward the lowly, the unprotected, and those who come carrying nothing but need.
Tulsidas stands far below the shining summit and asks for grace. The prayer ascends through cold air and reaches the One whose strength has mastered desire and whose heart remains open to the smallest cry.
Beside Uma, the moon bright Lord turns his compassion toward the valley below.
Read the passage from the Manas
कुंद इंदु सम देह उमा रमन करुना अयन। जाहि दीन पर नेह करउ कृपा मर्दन मयन।।4।।
Whose body is fair as jasmine and the autumn moon, who is Umaa's beloved and the very wellspring of compassion, who holds tender love for the lowly: may He, the conqueror of Kaamdev, shower His grace upon me.
