आइ लषन लै सौंपी सिय मुनीसहि आनि। नाइ सिर रहे पाइ आसिष जोरि पंकजपानि॥ १ ॥ बालमीकि बिलोकि व्याकुल लषन गरत गलानि। सरबबिद बूझत न, बिधिकी बामता पहिचानि॥ २ ॥ जानि जिय अनुमानही सिय सहस बिधि सनमानि। राम सदगुन-धाम-परमिति भई कछुक मलानि॥ ३ ॥ दीनबंधु दयालु देवर देखि अति अकुलानि। कहति बचन उदास तुलसीदास त्रिभुवन-रानि॥ ४ ॥
Lakṣmaṇa arrived and entrusted Sītā to the great sage. Bowing his head, he received the sage's blessing and stood with lotus hands joined. (1) Seeing Lakṣmaṇa distraught and wasting away with remorse, all-knowing Vālmīki recognized fate's hostility and asked him nothing. (2) Understanding everything inwardly by inference, he honored Sītā in a thousand ways, yet felt some sorrow: Rāma is the abode and utmost limit of every virtue. (3) Beholding her compassionate brother-in-law, friend of the lowly, the queen of the three worlds became exceedingly agitated and spoke these sorrowful words, says Tulsīdāsa. (4)
