Seeing Bharata and the slayer of foes, Śatrughna, the monkey was astonished: “Have Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa conquered the battle and returned to Ayodhyā? Am I deluded, or has someone contrived a deception?” (1) Recognizing them, he thrilled with love and bowed at their lotus feet. Words cannot tell how affectionately the two brothers gathered him to their hearts. (2) He told the news and grew anxious over the delay. Bharata said, “Mount my arrow with the mountain; I shall send you swiftly.” Hearing this, a hidden pride arose in Hanumān’s heart. (3) He dismounted from the arrow and wished to proclaim Bharata’s fame, but Bharata’s virtues conquered him. Crying “Blessed is Bharata! Blessed is Bharata!” his love-drenched mind fell silent. (4) This ocean has been dug, churned, crossed, bridged, and drunk; but what poet has crossed the ocean of the glory of Raghubīra’s brother? (5)
