The monkey playfully lifted the mountain, bowed his head to Raghunātha, and traveled through the sky with speed none could equal. (1) Seeing him pass and taking him for a night-ranger, Bharata struck his heart with a blunt arrow. Crying “Rāma,” he fell; the Wind held up the mountain, while the city seemed to drink his radiance. (2) Bharata went to him, clasped him to his breast, and restored his life. Hearing Lakṣmaṇa was mortally wounded brought little grief beside Bharata’s vast joy that the monkey lived. (3) The command kept Bharata here, while his Master faced peril there; he pondered but found nothing he could do. Tulsīdāsa says it was as if the sky had split—how could such a rift be sewn? (4)
