“All my strength and purpose have failed. Without the brother who was the arm sharing my adversity, in whom can I place trust? (1) Listen, Sugrīva: fate has truly turned its face from me. At this very hour of crisis in battle, a brother like Lakṣmaṇa has abandoned me. (2) The monkeys will return to mountain and forest, and I shall follow my younger brother; but anxiety fills my breast over what will become of Vibhīṣaṇa.” (3) Tulsī says that hearing the Lord’s words, every bear and monkey grew distraught and lost heart. Then Jāmbavān, recognizing the moment, called Hanumān and urged him on. (4)
