“Until now I have not told you, Trijaṭā: without my beloved lord of life, I have endured unbearable sorrow by day and night. (1) The terrible poisonous vine of separation has grown within my heart and by its nature burned away every joy. To water that vine, my eyes remain perpetually yoked to Love’s waterwheel. (2) The lake of my body has dried, and the aquatic creatures of life-breath wish to abandon hope and depart. You have cooled and kept them here with the nectar of the Lord’s fair fame, yet they have not found satisfaction. (3) With discernment and courage they were being swept into the fierce river of the enemy’s wrath; at that moment the pure son of the Wind gave them the signet-ring as support and swam out to seize them. (4) Tulsīdāsa says the forest of Sītā’s mind was filled with wretched deer of every sorrow. Trijaṭā answered, ‘Friend Sītā, cast doubt from your heart: the two heroic hunters have arrived.’ (5)
