Listen, Rāma, Hari who is the abode of rest, to how the daughter of Janaka endures extreme distress. Within her mind she repeats, “O brother of Sumitrā’s son, Treasure of Compassion!” but does not speak it aloud. (1) As she looks upon her own lotus feet, the water of her grieving eyes does not cease for even a moment. It is as though two blue lotuses born from the moon, separated from the sun, continually shed drops of nectar. (2) Surrounded by many demonesses beneath a tree, she spends her life in separation from you, like discernment trapped amid the peril of corrupt senses, watching for the path by which wisdom will dawn. (3) Hearing the monkey’s words, Hari reflected that her mind remains forever one-pointed in unfailing devotion to him. Tulsīdāsa says that Hari, beyond pleasure and pain, grieved like an ordinary man. (4)
