Rāvaṇa, if Rāma grows wrathful in battle, what mighty god or demon could withstand arrows sharper than the teeth of Time? (1) By ascetic power, strength of arm, or force of devotion you duly pleased Śiva and Brahmā. Do not destroy yourself, your kingdom, household, sons, and people—the very fruit you nurtured. (2) The bow of Śiva was the scale: noble kings and warriors from all three worlds were gathered and their strength was weighed. Even a crest-jewel of heroes like Paraśurāma was reduced in a moment to mere noise upon the field. (3) Remember what happened to Khara and to Vāli; open the window of discernment and understand benefit and harm. Do not accept the counsel of wicked ministers—recognize in your heart the great ruin bred by the three faults. (4) By his grace, heroes have arisen in the world who created the ocean, dug it, and dried it up. Tulsīdāsa says that Lord remained unseen to you although your twenty eyes stood open like windows in a palace. (5)
