ऐसे तैं क्यों कटु बचन कह्यो री? ‘राम जाहु कानन’, कठोर तेरो कैसे धौं हृदय रह्यो, री॥ १ ॥ दिनकर-बंस, पिता दसरथ-से, राम-लखन-से भाई। जननी! तू जननी? तो कहा कहौं, बिधि केहि खोरि न लाई?॥ २ ॥ हौं लहिहौं सुख राजमातु है, सुत सिर छत्र धरैगो। कुल-कलंक मल-मूल मनोरथ तब बिनु कौन करैगो?॥ ३ ॥ ऐहें राम, सखी सब हैंहैं, हँसि अजस मेरो हरिहैं। तुलसिदास मोको बड़ो सोच है, तू जनम कोनि बिधि भरिहैं॥ ४ ॥
How could you utter such cruel words: ‘Rāma, go to the forest’? How did your hard heart remain unbroken? (1) Born in the solar line, with a father like Daśaratha and brothers like Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa—mother, are you truly a mother? What can I say? Whom has fate not struck with fault? (2) ‘I shall enjoy being queen mother; the royal parasol will be held above my son.’ Who but you could conceive this stain upon the lineage, this root of impurity? (3) Rāma will return and all my friends will laugh away my disgrace. Tulsīdāsa says my great worry is this: how will you endure the rest of your life? (4)
