News of Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa has arrived; Ayodhyā rings with congratulations. Writing the fair wedding hour in a letter, Janaka, lord of the people, sent it in his priest's hand. (1) King Videha has a daughter surpassing all in beauty. Hearing of her self-choice, kings from every land arrived with their fourfold armies prepared. (2) The vow was Pināka, heavier and harder than thunderbolt and Meru. Guardians of the worlds, earthly kings, Bāṇa skilled with arrows, and ten-headed Rāvaṇa could not string the bow. (3) In that assembly they awakened Raghurāja's lion. Breaking Śambhu's bow, he won worldly victory, lovely fame, and Sītā—the jewel among women—as his bride. (4) Hearing the charming, desired news, immense joy filled every home in the city. The delighted mothers prepared auspicious things and said, ‘Friend, by the sage's grace every blessing has come to pass.’ (5) At the guru's command a pavilion was built and every fitting article arranged. Tulsīdāsa says Daśaratha arrayed the wedding procession, worshiped Gaṇeśa, and departed as the drums sounded. (6)
