Hearing that Kauśika had arrived, Janaka rejoiced. He summoned his guru and the Brahmins and went with his court to meet him; knowing his great good fortune, he was overwhelmed with love. (1) He bowed his head at the sage's feet, received his blessing in delight, and welcomed him respectfully with ceremonial cloths and an offering of water. Providing food, clothing, and every comfort of lodging, he worshiped and honored his dear guest with unaffected grace. (2) The sage and king exchanged humility and praise, thrilling with love and drinking their fill of joy. When he saw Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, his blinking stopped; without even knowing them, they seemed dearer to him than life. (3) In his heart he experienced the bliss of Brahman and in his eyes the joy of seeing; having tasted both, he found Rāma the sweeter. Remembering the state of Videha's love, Tulsī says, my mind judges that king to have been utterly wise. (4)
