They are the guardians of Kauśika's sacrifice. Their names are Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, exceedingly lovely and the cherished sons of King Daśaratha. (1) Dark and golden, tender as lotuses, these beautiful boys wear side-locks. The creator Love gathered up all beauty and adorned them with his own lotus hands. (2) Thousands of wicked men like Subāhu—mighty warriors and heavy champions in battle— they treated with contempt and slew like night-roamers in war, playfully bearing quiver, bow, and arrows in hand. (3) Having delivered the sage's wife, they set foot toward Janaka's city to behold the svayaṃvara. Men and women along the road gaze reverently and say, ‘Great indeed is our good fortune.’ (4) Tulsī says that, hearing the news from one another, spectators set out to behold them. It is as though the mute have gained the gift of speech and the blind have received the stars of sight. (5)
