Keśin

Among all efforts, even Keśin, the dear-friend of the Bhoja-king's lord, was without seed. Thinking 'I shall reach the Lord of the sea-born one' (sindhujā = Lakṣmī, sea-born; her Lord = Krishna), he came in the form of a sea-horse. The daśaka tells the killing of Keśin, the moment when the demons begin to lose all hope.

Daśaka 71, Verse 1
यत्नेषु सर्वेष्वपि नावकेशी केशी स भोजेशितुरिष्टबन्धुः ।
त्वं सिन्धुजावाप्य इतीव मत्वा संप्राप्तवान्सिन्धुजवाजिरूपः

yatneṣu sarveṣvapi nāvakeśī keśī sa bhojeśituriṣṭabandhuḥ tvaṁ sindhujāvāpya itīva matvā saṁprāptavānsindhujavājirūpaḥ

Daśaka 71, Verse 2
गन्धर्वतामेष गतोऽपि रूक्षैर्नादैः समुद्वेजितसर्वलोकः ।
भवद्विलोकावधि गोपवाटीं प्रमर्द्य पापः पुनरा पतत्त्वाम्

gandharvatāmeṣa gato'pi rūkṣairnādaiḥ samudvejitasarvalokaḥ bhavadvilokāvadhi gopavāṭīṁ pramardya pāpaḥ punarā patattvām

Even taking the gandharva form, with rough sounds shaking all the world, going to the cowherd-place, crushing it; the wicked one again, falling on you...

Daśaka 71, Verse 3
तार्क्ष्यार्पिताङ्घ्रेस्तव तार्क्ष्य एष चिक्षेप वक्षोभुवि नाम पादम् ।
भृगोः पदाघातकथां निशम्य स्वेनापि शक्यं तदितीव मोहात्

tārkṣyārpitāṅghrestava tārkṣya eṣa cikṣepa vakṣobhuvi nāma pādam bhṛgoḥ padāghātakathāṁ niśamya svenāpi śakyaṁ taditīva mohāt

You held him by the legs as he charged, swung him in the air, and threw him so hard that his body broke into pieces. The horse-demon was finished.

Daśaka 71, Verse 4
प्रवञ्चयन्नस्य खुराञ्चलं द्रागमुं च विक्षेपिथ दूरदूरम् ।
संमूर्छितोऽपि हतिमूर्छितेन क्रोधोष्मणा खादितुमाद्रुतस्त्वाम्

pravañcayannasya khurāñcalaṁ drāgamuṁ ca vikṣepitha dūradūram saṁmūrchito'pi hatimūrchitena krodhoṣmaṇā khāditumādrutastvām

The cowherds gathered around the carcass in wonder. Yet another demon had been ended. Their child seemed inexhaustible.

Daśaka 71, Verse 5
त्वं वाहदण्डे कृतधीश्च बाहादण्डं न्यधास्तस्य मुखे तदानीम् ।
तद्वृद्धिरुद्धश्वसनो गतासुः सप्तीभवन्नप्ययमैक्यमागात्

tvaṁ vāhadaṇḍe kṛtadhīśca bāhādaṇḍaṁ nyadhāstasya mukhe tadānīm tadvṛddhiruddhaśvasano gatāsuḥ saptībhavannapyayamaikyamāgāt

By that killing, even Brahmā came to praise you in person. He named you 'Keśava' from this day, the slayer of Keśin. The name stuck.

Daśaka 71, Verse 6
आलम्भमात्रेण पशोः सुराणां प्रसादके नूत्न इवाश्वमेधे ।
कृते त्वया हर्षवशात्सुरेन्द्रास्त्वां तुष्टुवुः केशवनामधेयम्

ālambhamātreṇa paśoḥ surāṇāṁ prasādake nūtna ivāśvamedhe kṛte tvayā harṣavaśātsurendrāstvāṁ tuṣṭuvuḥ keśavanāmadheyam

Then came Vyoma, another demon; you killed him too in play. The list of demons was nearly exhausted.

Daśaka 71, Verse 7
कंसाय ते शौरिसुतत्वमुक्त्वा तं तद्वधोत्कं प्रतिरुध्य वाचा ।
प्राप्तेन केशिक्षपणावसाने श्रीनारदेन त्वमभिष्टुतोऽभूः

kaṁsāya te śaurisutatvamuktvā taṁ tadvadhotkaṁ pratirudhya vācā prāptena keśikṣapaṇāvasāne śrīnāradena tvamabhiṣṭuto'bhūḥ

By each killing, the foretelling of Vasudeva and Devakī was brought closer to fulfilment.

Daśaka 71, Verse 8
कदापि गोपैः सह काननान्ते निलायनक्रीडनलोलुपं त्वाम् ।
मयात्मजः प्राप दुरन्तमायो व्योमाभिधो व्योमचरोपरोधी

kadāpi gopaiḥ saha kānanānte nilāyanakrīḍanalolupaṁ tvām mayātmajaḥ prāpa durantamāyo vyomābhidho vyomacaroparodhī

Lord, by such daily killing of what would harm the cowherd-place, you cleared the field. Clear my field.

Daśaka 71, Verse 9
स चोरपालायितवल्लवेषु चोरायितो गोपशिशून्पशूंश्च ।
गुहासु कृत्वा पिदधे शिलाभिस्त्वया च बुद्ध्वा परिमर्दितोऽभूत्

sa corapālāyitavallaveṣu corāyito gopaśiśūnpaśūṁśca guhāsu kṛtvā pidadhe śilābhistvayā ca buddhvā parimardito'bhūt

Lord of the wind-house, save me from the inner Keśins, the prides that keep galloping at me.

Daśaka 71, Verse 10
एवंविधैश्चाद्भुतकेलिभेदैरानन्दमूर्छामतुलां व्रजस्य ।
पदे पदे नूतनयन्नसीमां परात्मरूपिन् पवनेशपायाः

evaṁvidhaiścādbhutakelibhedairānandamūrchāmatulāṁ vrajasya pade pade nūtanayannasīmāṁ parātmarūpin pavaneśapāyāḥ

Save me by such direct breaking.
