Vṛndāvana, the Cowherd Boys

10 verses

Then in the heart-charming Vṛndāvana with its mood of bees, your moves were eager for the herding of the calves, with the cowherd boys, lord, the friend of Balarāma. The daśaka opens the Vṛndāvana phase.

Daśaka 50, Verse 1
तरलमधुकृद्वृन्दे बृन्दावनेऽथ मनोहरे
पशुपशिशुभिस्साकं वत्सानुपालनलोलुपः ।
हलधरसखो देव श्रीमन् विचेरिथ धारयन्
गवलमुरळीवेत्रं नेत्राभिरामतनुद्युतिः

taralamadhukṛdvṛnde bṛndāvane'tha manohare paśupaśiśubhissākaṁ vatsānupālanalolupaḥ haladharasakho deva śrīman viceritha dhārayan gavalamuraḻīvetraṁ netrābhirāmatanudyutiḥ

In trembling-honey-drinking-bee-cluster Vṛndāvana, the heart-stealing, with the cowherd-children together with the calves, calf-herding-eager, plough-bearer-friend, lord, glorious, you wandered, holding the buffalo-horn-flute.

Daśaka 50, Verse 2
विहितजगतीरक्षं लक्ष्मीकराम्बुजलाळितं
ददति चरणद्वन्द्वं बृन्दावने त्वयि पावने ।
किमिव न बभौ सम्पत्सम्पूरितं तरुवल्लरी
सलिलधरणीगोत्रक्षेत्रादिकं कमलापते

vihitajagatīrakṣaṁ lakṣmīkarāmbujalāḻitaṁ dadati caraṇadvandvaṁ bṛndāvane tvayi pāvane kimiva na babhau sampatsampūritaṁ taruvallarī saliladharaṇīgotrakṣetrādikaṁ kamalāpate

World-protection-doing, Lakṣmī's-hand-lotus-loved, the foot-pair giving, on Vṛndāvana the holy, by you, what did not shine? Wealth-filled tree-creeper-water-and the rest.

Daśaka 50, Verse 3
विलसदुलपे कान्तारान्ते समीरणशीतळे
विपुलयमुनातीरे गोवर्धनाचलमूर्धसु ।
लळितमुरळीनादस्सञ्चारयन्खलु वात्सकं
क्वचन दिवसे दैत्यं वत्साकृतिं त्वमुदैक्षथाः

vilasadulape kāntārānte samīraṇaśītaḻe vipulayamunātīre govardhanācalamūrdhasu laḻitamuraḻīnādassañcārayankhalu vātsakaṁ kvacana divase daityaṁ vatsākṛtiṁ tvamudaikṣathāḥ

Sport-with-leaf-edge-forest-end, by the wind cool, on the ample Yamunā shore, on Govardhana-mountain-top, sweet-flute-sound-spreading, you sent calves; on a certain day...

Daśaka 50, Verse 4
रभसविलसत्पुच्छं विच्छायतोऽस्य विलोकयन्
किमपि वलितस्कन्धं रन्ध्रप्रतीक्षमुदीक्षितम् ।
तमथ चरणे बिभ्रद्विभ्रामयन्मुहुरुच्चकैः
कुहचन महावृक्षे चिक्षेपिथ क्षतजीवितम्

rabhasavilasatpucchaṁ vicchāyato'sya vilokayan kimapi valitaskandhaṁ randhrapratīkṣamudīkṣitam tamatha caraṇe bibhradvibhrāmayanmuhuruccakaiḥ kuhacana mahāvṛkṣe cikṣepitha kṣatajīvitam

Speed-shining-tail, dim-shadowy seeing, somehow turned-shoulder, gap-watching observed: it (Vatsāsura), then, on foot-holding-whirling-many-times-high...

Daśaka 50, Verse 5
निपतति महादैत्ये जात्या दुरात्मनि तत्क्षणं
निपतनजवक्षुण्णक्षोणीरुहक्षतकानने ।
दिवि परमिळद्वृन्दा बृन्दारकाः कुसुमोत्करैः
शिरसि भवतो हर्षाद्वर्षन्ति नाम तदा हरे

nipatati mahādaitye jātyā durātmani tatkṣaṇaṁ nipatanajavakṣuṇṇakṣoṇīruhakṣatakānane divi paramiḻadvṛndā bṛndārakāḥ kusumotkaraiḥ śirasi bhavato harṣādvarṣanti nāma tadā hare

When the great-asura-by-nature-evil fell at that moment, by the fall-speed-broken-earth-tree-broken-forest, in heaven, the gathering of Vṛndā and the great gods, scattered flower-heaps on the head.

Daśaka 50, Verse 6
सुरभिलतमा मूर्धन्यूर्ध्वं कुतः कुसुमावली
निपतति तवेत्युक्तो बालैः सहेलमुदैरयः ।
झटिति दनुजक्षेपेणोर्ध्वं गतस्तरुमण्डलात्
कुसुमनिकरस्सोऽयं नूनं समेति शनैरिति

surabhilatamā mūrdhanyūrdhvaṁ kutaḥ kusumāvalī nipatati tavetyukto bālaiḥ sahelamudairayaḥ jhaṭiti danujakṣepeṇordhvaṁ gatastarumaṇḍalāt kusumanikarasso'yaṁ nūnaṁ sameti śanairiti

'The fragrance-most-creeper from above where, the flower-row falls on you,' so, asked by the boys, with smile you replied: 'Suddenly the demon-throw upward, gone from tree-circle, flowers...'

Daśaka 50, Verse 7
क्वचन दिवसे भूयो भूयस्तरेपरुषातपे
तपनतनयापाथः पातुं गता भवदादयः ।
चलितगरुतं प्रेक्षामासुर्बकं खलु विस्मृतं
क्षितिधरगरुच्छेदे कैलासशैलमिवापरम्

kvacana divase bhūyo bhūyastareparuṣātape tapanatanayāpāthaḥ pātuṁ gatā bhavadādayaḥ calitagarutaṁ prekṣāmāsurbakaṁ khalu vismṛtaṁ kṣitidharagarucchede kailāsaśailamivāparam

On a certain day, again, more-fierce-summer-time, sun-daughter-water drinking, gone, you and others, with shaking-wings looking saw the heron, surely forgetting the earth-bearer-trembling-by.

Daśaka 50, Verse 8
पिबति सलिलं गोपव्राते भवनतमभिद्रुतः
स किल निगिलन्नग्निप्रख्यं पुनर्द्रुतमुद्वमन् ।
दलयितुमगात्त्रोट्याः कोट्या तदा यु भवान्विभो
खलजनभिदाचुञ्चुश्चञ्चू प्रगृह्य ददार तम्

pibati salilaṁ gopavrāte bhavanatamabhidrutaḥ sa kila nigilannagniprakhyaṁ punardrutamudvaman dalayitumagāttroṭyāḥ koṭyā tadā yu bhavānvibho khalajanabhidācuñcuścañcū pragṛhya dadāra tam

When the cowherd-host was drinking water, came running on you; surely swallowing, fire-comparable, again swiftly disgorging, to split, by the beak-tip you went, then this you, lord...

Daśaka 50, Verse 9
सपदि सहजां सन्द्रष्टुं वा मृतां खलु पूतना
मनुजमघमप्यग्रे गत्वा प्रतीक्षितुमेव वा ।
शमननिलयं याते तस्मिन्बके सुमनोगणे
किरति सुमनोबृन्दं बृन्दावनाद्गृहमैयथाः

sapadi sahajāṁ sandraṣṭuṁ vā mṛtāṁ khalu pūtanā manujamaghamapyagre gatvā pratīkṣitumeva vā śamananilayaṁ yāte tasminbake sumanogaṇe kirati sumanobṛndaṁ bṛndāvanādgṛhamaiyathāḥ

'Suddenly, to see the sister also dead, surely Pūtanā, eldest demon, Aghāsura also forward going, just to wait, gone to the death-abode...'

Daśaka 50, Verse 10
लळितमुरळीनादं दूरान्निशम्य वधूजनै
स्त्वरितमुपगम्यारादारूढमोदमुदीक्षितः ।
जनितजननीनन्दानन्दस्समीरणमन्दिर
प्रथितवसते शौरे दूरीकुरुष्व ममामयान्

laḻitamuraḻīnādaṁ dūrānniśamya vadhūjanai stvaritamupagamyārādārūḍhamodamudīkṣitaḥ janitajananīnandānandassamīraṇamandira prathitavasate śaure dūrīkuruṣva mamāmayān

By the lovely-flute-sound from afar hearing, by the women, swiftly approaching, mounted-with-joy-watching, mother-Yaśodā-bliss-bringing-bliss-self, breeze-house-renowned-dwelling, Śauri, lord, save me.
