The Damodara story I 47 of 100

The Butter, the Binding

10 verses

One day, having approached the mother who was churning the curds, in your eagerness for the breast, stopping her, you climbed into her lap and began drinking the milk. The daśaka tells the prelude to the rope-binding by Yaśodā.

Daśaka 47, Verse 1
एकदा दधिविमाथकारिणीं मातरं समुपसेदिवान् भवान् ।
स्तन्यलोलुपतया निवारयन्नङ्कमेत्य पपिवान्पयोधरौ

ekadā dadhivimāthakāriṇīṁ mātaraṁ samupasedivān bhavān stanyalolupatayā nivārayannaṅkametya papivānpayodharau

Once, having approached the mother who was churning curd, you, breast-eager, stopping her, climbing into the lap, drank the breasts.

Daśaka 47, Verse 2
अर्धपीतकुचकुड्मळे त्वयि स्निग्धहासमधुराननाम्बुजे ।
दुग्धमीश दहने परिस्नुतं धर्तुमाशु जननी जगाम ते

ardhapītakucakuḍmaḻe tvayi snigdhahāsamadhurānanāmbuje dugdhamīśa dahane parisnutaṁ dhartumāśu jananī jagāma te

When you, the half-drunk-breast-bud, with affectionate-smile-sweet-mouth-lotus-on-yourself, the mother went swiftly to take down the milk overflowing in the fire.

Daśaka 47, Verse 3
सामिपीतरसभङ्गसङ्गतक्रोधभारपरिभूतचेतसा ।
मन्थदण्डमुपगृह्य पाटितं हन्त देव दधिभाजनं त्वया

sāmipītarasabhaṅgasaṅgatakrodhabhāraparibhūtacetasā manthadaṇḍamupagṛhya pāṭitaṁ hanta deva dadhibhājanaṁ tvayā

By the half-drunk-rasa-broken-meeting-anger-load-overcome-mind, holding the churning-stick, alas, lord, the curd-pot was split by you.

Daśaka 47, Verse 4
उच्चल ध्वनितमुच्चकैस्तदा सन्निशम्य जननी समादृता ।
त्वद्यशोविसरवद्ददर्श सा सद्य एव दधि विस्तृतं क्षितौ

uccala dhvanitamuccakaistadā sanniśamya jananī samādṛtā tvadyaśovisaravaddadarśa sā sadya eva dadhi vistṛtaṁ kṣitau

Then, hearing the loud splash-sound, the mother, hastily concerned, your fame-spreading, suddenly saw curd spread on the ground.

Daśaka 47, Verse 5
वेदमार्गपरिमार्गितं रुषा त्वामवीक्ष्य परिमार्गयन्त्यसौ ।
सन्ददर्श सुकृतिन्युलूखले दीयमाननवनीतमोतवे

vedamārgaparimārgitaṁ ruṣā tvāmavīkṣya parimārgayantyasau sandadarśa sukṛtinyulūkhale dīyamānanavanītamotave

On the Veda-path-followed pretext, in anger, not seeing you, looking, on the mortar she saw, fortunately, you eating the ample fresh-butter.

Daśaka 47, Verse 6
त्वां प्रगृह्य बत भीतिभावनाभासुराननसरोजमाशु सा ।
रोषरूषितमुखी सखीपुरो बन्धनाय रशनामुपाददे

tvāṁ pragṛhya bata bhītibhāvanābhāsurānanasarojamāśu sā roṣarūṣitamukhī sakhīpuro bandhanāya raśanāmupādade

Taking you, alas, fear-imagination-shining-face-lotus, swiftly, she, anger-roughened-face, before the friends, took up the rope to bind.

Daśaka 47, Verse 7
बन्धुमिच्छति यमेव सज्जनस्तं भवन्तमयि बन्धुमिच्छति ।
सा नियुज्य रशनागुणान्बहून् द्वयङ्गुलोनमखिलं किलैक्षत

bandhumicchati yameva sajjanastaṁ bhavantamayi bandhumicchati sā niyujya raśanāguṇānbahūn dvayaṅgulonamakhilaṁ kilaikṣata

Whatever bond-loving the good-people wish, you, the bond-wisher of theirs alone, she, employing many rope-strings, two-finger-short the whole, indeed she saw.

Daśaka 47, Verse 8
विस्मितोत्स्मितसखीजनेक्षितां स्विन्नसन्नवपुषं निरीक्ष्य ताम् ।
नित्यमुक्तवपुरप्यहो हरे बन्धमेव कृपयान्वमन्यथाः

vismitotsmitasakhījanekṣitāṁ svinnasannavapuṣaṁ nirīkṣya tām nityamuktavapurapyaho hare bandhameva kṛpayānvamanyathāḥ

By astonished-smiling-friend-people-watched, sweat-soaked-fresh-body, looking at you, ever-free-bodied-even, ah, lord, the bondage only by compassion you did consider.

Daśaka 47, Verse 9
स्थीयतां चिरमुलूखले खलेत्यागता भवनमेव सा यदा ।
प्रागुलूखलबिलान्तरे तदा सर्पिरर्पितमदन्नवास्थिताः

sthīyatāṁ ciramulūkhale khaletyāgatā bhavanameva sā yadā prāgulūkhalabilāntare tadā sarpirarpitamadannavāsthitāḥ

'Stay long in the mortar, naughty,' so coming home, when she; before the mortar's hole, then the ghee being given, sat eating.

Daśaka 47, Verse 10
यद्यपाशसुगमो भवान्विभो संयतः किमु सपाशयानया ।
एवमादि दिविजैरभिष्टुतो वातनाथ परिपाहि मां गदात्

yadyapāśasugamo bhavānvibho saṁyataḥ kimu sapāśayānayā evamādi divijairabhiṣṭuto vātanātha paripāhi māṁ gadāt

'Even if a noose is easy for you, lord, why bind by ropes?' Such by the gods praised, lord of the wind, save me from disease.
