Garga Names the Child

10 verses

By the secret instruction of Vasudeva, the day-and-hour-knowing sage Garga came to your house, lord, to perform the saṁskāras of you who are without action. The daśaka tells the naming: by Garga's word, you receive the name Kṛṣṇa.

Daśaka 44, Verse 1

gūḍhaṁ vasudevagirā kartuṁ te niṣkriyasya saṁskārān hṛdgatahorātatvo gargamunistvadgṛhaṁ vibho gatavān

Hidden by Vasudeva's word, to perform your action-less saṁskāras, the sage Garga, who knew the hour-truth, came to your house, lord.

Daśaka 44, Verse 2

nando'tha nanditātmā vṛndiṣṭaṁ mānayannamuṁ yaminām mandasmitārdramūce tvatsaṁskārān vidhātumutsukadhīḥ

Then Nanda, glad-self, honoured the bowed-by-many one, with gentle smile, addressed eager-minded to perform your saṁskāras.

Daśaka 44, Verse 3

yaduvaṁśācāryatvāt sunibhṛtamidamārya kāryamiti kathayan gargo nirgatapuḻakaścakre tava sāgrajasya nāmāni

'Because of being teacher of the Yadu line, this work is to be done very-secretly, gentle one,' so saying, Garga, with hairs-erect, made the names of you with your elder brother.

Daśaka 44, Verse 4

kathamasya nāma kurve sahasranāmno hyanantanāmno vā iti nūnaṁ gargamuniścakre tava nāma nāma rahasi vibho

'How shall I make his name? It must be of thousand-names or endless-names!' So, surely, the sage Garga made your name in secret, lord.

Daśaka 44, Verse 5

kṛṣidhātuṇakārābhyāṁ sattānandātmatāṁ kilābhilapat jagadaghakarṣitvaṁ vā kathayadṛṣiḥ kṛṣṇanāma te vyatanot

By the syllables 'kṛṣ' and 'ṇa', expressing being-bliss-self, or telling the world-sin-removing-state, the sage spread your name 'Kṛṣṇa'.

Daśaka 44, Verse 6

anyāṁśca nāmabhedān vyākurvannagraje ca rāmādīn atimānuṣānubhāvaṁ nyagadattvāmaprakāśayanpitre

Other name-divisions explaining: 'Rāma' and others to your elder brother, expressing the over-human-influence, he told to your father, not revealing.

Daśaka 44, Verse 7

'Whoever takes love in this son, he will not by māyā-pains be deluded again; whoever hates, he will perish.' So spoke the great sage of your greatness.

Daśaka 44, Verse 8

jeṣyati bahutaradaityān neṣyati nijabandhulokamamalapadam śroṣyati suvimalakīrtīrasyeti bhavadvibhūtimṛṣirūce

'He will conquer many demons; he will lead his own kin to a stainless place; he will hear his own pure fame,' so the sage spoke of your might.

Daśaka 44, Verse 9

amunaiva sarvadurgaṁ taritāstha kṛtāsthamatra tiṣṭhadhvam harirevetyanabhilapannityādi tvāmavarṇayat sa muniḥ

'By him only every difficulty will be crossed; have firm-faith here, stay,' Hari only, indeed, not speaking; such things he described you, the sage.

Daśaka 44, Verse 10

garge'tha nirgate'smin nanditanandādinandyamānastvam madgadamudgatakaruṇo nirgamaya śrīmarutpurādhīśa

Then, when Garga had gone, you, by Nanda gladdened, gladness-giving lord, my disease coming-up-compassion, take away, lord of the Wind-city.
