The Eightfold Yoga

15 verses

Mēlpattūr asks for the strength to walk the eight-limb yoga, by which he can attain your worship. Restraints, observances, posture, breath, sense-withdrawal, concentration, meditation, samādhi: he names them in sequence and asks the Lord to give him the wherewithal for each. The daśaka is unusual in the work for its technical Sāṅkhya-Yoga vocabulary; it is Mēlpattūr's quiet acknowledgment that the philosophical path is also yours.

Daśaka 4, Verse 1
कल्यताम् मम कुरुष्व तावतीं कल्यते भवदुपासनं यया।
स्पष्टमष्टविधयोगचर्यया पुष्टयाऽऽशु तव तुष्टिमाप्नुयाम्

kalyatām mama kuruṣva tāvatīṁ kalyate bhavadupāsanaṁ yayā spaṣṭamaṣṭavidhayogacaryayā puṣṭayā''śu tava tuṣṭimāpnuyām

Make me strong enough that I may even attempt your worship: by the clear practice of the eightfold yoga, fully ripened, may I quickly attain your delight.

Purified by the firm restraints (yama) beginning with celibacy, and by the observances (niyama) of bathing and the rest, devoted to you we hold fast a comfortable posture, the lotus or any other.

अस्फुटे वपुषि ते प्रयत्नतो धारयेम धिषणां मुहुर्मुहुः।

asphuṭe vapuṣi te prayatnato dhārayema dhiṣaṇāṁ muhurmuhuḥ tenabhaktirasamantarārdratāmudvahema bhavadaṅghricintakāḥ

On your subtle form, with effort we hold the mind again and again; by that, the rasa of bhakti rises wet within, and we contemplate your feet.

When samādhi has been won, the one eager for liberation either gradually or quickly raises the breath, mastered by yoga, through the six chakras up the suṣumnā nāḍī, slowly.
