The Crossing of the Yamunā

10 verses

Carrying you, the bearer of the Yadu lineage, going forth he saw the Yamunā the daughter of Kālinda, swelling with the heavy rains, the cosmos' waters merged. The daśaka tells the famous moment of Vasudeva's crossing the river with the infant Krishna.

Daśaka 39, Verse 1
भवन्तमयमुद्वहन् यदुकुलोद्वहो निस्सरन्
ददर्श गगनोच्चलज्जलभरां कलिन्दात्मजाम् ।
अहि सलिलसञ्चयः स पुनरैन्द्रजालोदितो
जलौघ इव तत्क्षणात्प्रपदमेयतामाययौ

bhavantamayamudvahan yadukulodvaho nissaran dadarśa gaganoccalajjalabharāṁ kalindātmajām ahi salilasañcayaḥ sa punaraindrajālodito jalaugha iva tatkṣaṇātprapadameyatāmāyayau

Carrying you, the bearer of the Yadu lineage, going forth, he saw the Yamunā, daughter of Kālinda, swelling with the sky-water-load, yet she withdrew, recognising who you were, and made way as if by Indra's magic.

Daśaka 39, Verse 2
प्रसुप्तपशुपालिकां निभृतमारुदद्बालिका
मपावृतकवाटिकां पशुपवाटिकामाविशन् ।
भवन्तमयमर्पयन् प्रसवतल्पके तत्पदा
द्वहन् कपटकन्यकां स्वपुरमागतो वेगतः

prasuptapaśupālikāṁ nibhṛtamārudadbālikā mapāvṛtakavāṭikāṁ paśupavāṭikāmāviśan bhavantamayamarpayan prasavatalpake tatpadā dvahan kapaṭakanyakāṁ svapuramāgato vegataḥ

Entering the cowherd-yard where the herd-women were asleep and a girl was crying gently, where the door was open, placing you on the birth-bed, lifting that one's foot, the māyā-girl-bearer brought her back.

Daśaka 39, Verse 3
ततस्त्वदनुजारवक्षपितनिद्रवेगद्रव
द्भटोत्करनिवेदितप्रसववार्तयैवार्तिमान् ।
विमुक्तचिकुरोत्करस्त्वरितमापतन् भोजरा
डतुष्ट इव दृष्टवान् भगिनिकाकरे कन्यकाम्

tatastvadanujāravakṣapitanidravegadrava dbhaṭotkaraniveditaprasavavārtayaivārtimān vimuktacikurotkarastvaritamāpatan bhojarā ḍatuṣṭa iva dṛṣṭavān bhaginikākare kanyakām

When by your sister's sound the broken-sleep-going-fast-running attendants reported to the Bhoja-king the news of birth, with hair-locks loosened, swiftly running, as if delighted, he saw before him your sister.

Daśaka 39, Verse 4
ध्रुवं कपटशालिनो मधुहरस्य माया भवे
दसाविति किशोरिकां भगिनिकाकरालिङ्गिताम् ।
द्विपो नळिनिकान्तरादिव मृणाळिकामाक्षिप
न्नयं त्वदनुजामजामुपलपट्टके पिष्टवान्

dhruvaṁ kapaṭaśālino madhuharasya māyā bhave dasāviti kiśorikāṁ bhaginikākarāliṅgitām dvipo naḻinikāntarādiva mṛṇāḻikāmākṣipa nnayaṁ tvadanujāmajāmupalapaṭṭake piṣṭavān

'Surely the māyā of the deceiver, slayer of Madhu, is this,' so saying, the demon, with his sister's hand-embraced child, like a tusker plucking a small lotus-stalk from the pond, snatched up your sister.

Daśaka 39, Verse 5
ततो भवदुपासको झटिति मृत्युपाशादिव
प्रमुच्य तरसैव सा समधिरूढरूपान्तरा ।
अधस्तलमजग्मुषी विकसदष्टबाहुस्फुरन्
महायुधमहो गता किल विहायसा दिद्युते

tato bhavadupāsako jhaṭiti mṛtyupāśādiva pramucya tarasaiva sā samadhirūḍharūpāntarā adhastalamajagmuṣī vikasadaṣṭabāhusphuran mahāyudhamaho gatā kila vihāyasā didyute

Then your worshipper, like one freed from death's noose, swiftly assumed another form, blooming eight arms, holding shining great weapons. Going to the underworld...

Daśaka 39, Verse 6
नृशंसतर कंस ते किमु मया विनिष्पिष्टया
बभूव भवदन्तकः क्वचन चिन्त्यतां ते हितम् ।
इति त्वदनुजा विभो खलमुदीर्य तं जग्मुषी
मरुद्गणपणायिता भुवि च मन्दिराण्येयुषी

nṛśaṁsatara kaṁsa te kimu mayā viniṣpiṣṭayā babhūva bhavadantakaḥ kvacana cintyatāṁ te hitam iti tvadanujā vibho khalamudīrya taṁ jagmuṣī marudgaṇapaṇāyitā bhuvi ca mandirāṇyeyuṣī

'Cruel Kaṁsa, what good was done by my crushing? Your destroyer is somewhere alive. Consider your welfare,' so saying, your sister, the wicked one, declared and went away.

Daśaka 39, Verse 7
प्रगे पुनरगात्मजावचनमीरिता भूभुजा
प्रलम्बबकपूतनाप्रमुखदानवा मानिनः ।
भवन्निधनकाम्यया जगति बभ्रमुर्निर्भयाः
कुमारकविमारकाः किमिव दुष्करं निष्कृपैः

prage punaragātmajāvacanamīritā bhūbhujā pralambabakapūtanāpramukhadānavā māninaḥ bhavannidhanakāmyayā jagati babhramurnirbhayāḥ kumārakavimārakāḥ kimiva duṣkaraṁ niṣkṛpaiḥ

Then in the morning, by the king's word, summoned, Pralamba, Baka, Pūtanā and the chief demons, proud, eager for your killing, wandered the world fearlessly. They knew not the youth.

Daśaka 39, Verse 8
ततः पशुपमन्दिरे त्वयि मुकुन्द नन्दप्रिया
प्रसूतिशयनेशये रुदति किञ्चिदञ्चत्पदे ।
विबुध्य वनिताजनैस्तनयसंभवे घोषिते
मुदा किमु वदाम्यहो सकलमाकुलं गोकुलम्

tataḥ paśupamandire tvayi mukunda nandapriyā prasūtiśayaneśaye rudati kiñcidañcatpade vibudhya vanitājanaistanayasaṁbhave ghoṣite mudā kimu vadāmyaho sakalamākulaṁ gokulam

Then in the cowherd-house, when you, lying on Yaśodā's bed beloved of Nanda, were crying somewhat, with feet stretched, when by the women on the awakening of the son's birth was joyfully proclaimed.

Daśaka 39, Verse 9
अहो खलु यशोदया नवकळायचेतोहरं
भवन्तमलमन्तिके प्रथममपिबन्त्या दृशा ।
पुनः स्तनभरं निजं सपदि पाययन्त्या मुदा
मनोहरतनुस्पृशा जगति पुण्यवन्तो जिताः

aho khalu yaśodayā navakaḻāyacetoharaṁ bhavantamalamantike prathamamapibantyā dṛśā punaḥ stanabharaṁ nijaṁ sapadi pāyayantyā mudā manoharatanuspṛśā jagati puṇyavanto jitāḥ

Ah, Yaśodā, drinking with her eyes you, the captivating-mind one of fresh-kalāya-flower-form kept near, again giving you her own breast-load, instantly with joy nursing, the heart-thief.

Daśaka 39, Verse 10
भवत्कुशलकाम्यया स खलु नन्दगोपस्तदा
प्रमोदभरसङ्कुले द्विजकुलाय किं नाददात् ।
तथैव पशुपालकाः किमु न मङ्गलं तेनिरे
जगत्रितयमङ्गल त्वमिह पाहि मामामयात्

bhavatkuśalakāmyayā sa khalu nandagopastadā pramodabharasaṅkule dvijakulāya kiṁ nādadāt tathaiva paśupālakāḥ kimu na maṅgalaṁ tenire jagatritayamaṅgala tvamiha pāhi māmāmayāt

For the welfare of you, this Nanda, with hosts of joy gathered, what did he not give to the brāhmaṇa-clan? Likewise the cowherds, what auspiciousness did they not perform, in the three worlds?
