Bali, the Asura King

10 verses

Bali, killed in battle by Indra, was revived by Śukra and grew large with sacrifice. The asura, full of warlike accomplishment, gathered the three worlds into his dominion. The daśaka prepares the Vāmana avatāra.

Daśaka 30, Verse 1
शक्रेण संयति हतोऽपि बलिर्महात्मा
शुक्रेण जीविततनुः क्रतुवर्धितोष्मा ।
विक्रान्तिमान् भयनिलीनसुरां त्रिलोकीं
चक्रे वशे स तव चक्रमुखादभीतः

śakreṇa saṁyati hato'pi balirmahātmā śukreṇa jīvitatanuḥ kratuvardhitoṣmā vikrāntimān bhayanilīnasurāṁ trilokīṁ cakre vaśe sa tava cakramukhādabhītaḥ

Bali, the great-souled, though killed in battle by Indra, with body revived by Śukra, his power increased by sacrifice, mighty, brought the three-world (with gods hidden in fear) under his sway, fearless of your discus's mouth.

Daśaka 30, Verse 2
पुत्रार्तिदर्शनवशाददितिर्विषण्णा
तं काश्यपं निजपतिं शरणं प्रपन्ना ।
त्वत्पूजनं तदुदितं हि पयोव्रताख्यं
सा द्वादशाहमचरत्त्वयि भक्तिपूर्णा

putrārtidarśanavaśādaditirviṣaṇṇā taṁ kāśyapaṁ nijapatiṁ śaraṇaṁ prapannā tvatpūjanaṁ taduditaṁ hi payovratākhyaṁ sā dvādaśāhamacarattvayi bhaktipūrṇā

Aditi, troubled at the sight of her sons' suffering, went for refuge to her own husband Kāśyapa. The worship of you, called the Payovrata, declared by him, she, full of devotion to you, performed for twelve days.

Daśaka 30, Verse 3
तस्यावधौ त्वयि निलीनमतेरमुष्याः
श्यामश्चतुर्भुजवपुः स्वयमाविरासीः ।
नम्रां च तामिह भवत्तनयो भवेयं
गोप्यं मदीक्षणमिति प्रलपन्नयासीः

tasyāvadhau tvayi nilīnamateramuṣyāḥ śyāmaścaturbhujavapuḥ svayamāvirāsīḥ namrāṁ ca tāmiha bhavattanayo bhaveyaṁ gopyaṁ madīkṣaṇamiti pralapannayāsīḥ

At its end, of her with mind absorbed in you, dark, four-armed, you yourself appeared. Bowing, 'may I be born in this form to her', so you said with hidden mention, then vanished.

Daśaka 30, Verse 4
त्वं काश्यपे तपसि सन्निदधत्तदानीं
प्राप्तोऽसि गर्भमदितेः प्रणुतो विधात्रा ।
प्रासूत च प्रकटवैष्णवदिव्यरूपं
सा द्वादशीश्रवणपुण्यदिने भवन्तम्

tvaṁ kāśyape tapasi sannidadhattadānīṁ prāpto'si garbhamaditeḥ praṇuto vidhātrā prāsūta ca prakaṭavaiṣṇavadivyarūpaṁ sā dvādaśīśravaṇapuṇyadine bhavantam

When you came to Kāśyapa engaged in austerity, you reached the womb of Aditi, praised by Vidhātṛ. She gave birth to you, of manifest divine Vaiṣṇava form, on the holy day of the dvādaśī-śravaṇa.

Daśaka 30, Verse 5
पुण्याश्रमं तमभिवर्षति पुष्पवर्षै
र्हर्षाकुले सुरकुले कृततूर्यघोषे ।
बध्वाञ्जलिं जय जयेति तनुः पितृभ्यां
त्वं तत्क्षणे पटुतमं वटुरूपमाधाः

puṇyāśramaṁ tamabhivarṣati puṣpavarṣai rharṣākule surakule kṛtatūryaghoṣe badhvāñjaliṁ jaya jayeti tanuḥ pitṛbhyāṁ tvaṁ tatkṣaṇe paṭutamaṁ vaṭurūpamādhāḥ

While the holy āśrama was showered with flower-rains by joyful gods making the four kinds of music, with hands folded singing 'victory, victory', you, child, suddenly took on the most-deft brahmacārin form.

Daśaka 30, Verse 6
तावत्प्रजापतिमुखैरुपनीय मौञ्जी
दण्डाजिनाक्षवलयादिभिरर्च्यमानः ।
देदीप्यमानवपुरीश कृताग्निकार्य
स्त्वं प्रास्थिथा बलिगृहं प्रकृताश्वमेधम्

tāvatprajāpatimukhairupanīya mauñjī daṇḍājinākṣavalayādibhirarcyamānaḥ dedīpyamānavapurīśa kṛtāgnikārya stvaṁ prāsthithā baligṛhaṁ prakṛtāśvamedham

Then, brought near by the lords of creatures, given the muñja-belt, the staff, deer-skin, rosary, and the rest of ornaments, your body shining, lord, having performed the fire-ceremony, you set out for Bali's house, where the horse-sacrifice was being performed.

Daśaka 30, Verse 7
गात्रेण भाविमहिमोचितगौरवं प्राग्
व्यावृण्वतेव धरणीं चलयन्नयासीः ।
छत्रं परोष्मतिरणार्थमिवादधानो
दण्डं च दानवजनेष्विवं सन्निधातुम्

gātreṇa bhāvimahimocitagauravaṁ prāg vyāvṛṇvateva dharaṇīṁ calayannayāsīḥ chatraṁ paroṣmatiraṇārthamivādadhāno daṇḍaṁ ca dānavajaneṣvivaṁ sannidhātum

By your body, displaying the future-greatness-fitting weight, even before, shaking the earth, you walked, holding the parasol as if to put up against an enemy in battle, holding the staff, which seemed to be ready to be set among the demon-clan.

Daśaka 30, Verse 8
तां नर्मदित्तरतटे हयमेधशाला
मासेदुषि त्वयि रुचा तव रुद्धनेत्रैः ।
भास्वान्किमेष दहनो नु सनत्कुमारो
योगी नु कोऽयमिति शुक्रमुखैः शशङ्के

tāṁ narmadittarataṭe hayamedhaśālā māseduṣi tvayi rucā tava ruddhanetraiḥ bhāsvānkimeṣa dahano nu sanatkumāro yogī nu ko'yamiti śukramukhaiḥ śaśaṅke

When you reached the horse-sacrifice hall on the bank of the Narmadā, by your radiance their eyes were stopped: 'is this the sun? a fire? Sanatkumāra? what yogin is this?' so they wondered, with Śukra and the others.

Daśaka 30, Verse 9
आनीतमाशु भृगुभिर्महसाभिभूतै
स्त्वां रम्यरूपमसुरः पुळकावृताङ्गः ।
भक्त्या समेत्य सुकृती परिषिच्य पादौ
तत्तोयमन्वधृत मूर्धति तीर्थतीर्थम्

ānītamāśu bhṛgubhirmahasābhibhūtai stvāṁ ramyarūpamasuraḥ puḻakāvṛtāṅgaḥ bhaktyā sametya sukṛtī pariṣicya pādau tattoyamanvadhṛta mūrdhati tīrthatīrtham

Brought quickly by the Bhṛgus, defeated by your radiance, the asura, of charming form to him, with hairs on end, with devotion approaching, the meritorious one, sprinkling your feet, set the water on his head: the holy place of holy places.

Daśaka 30, Verse 10
प्रह्लादवंशजतया क्रतुभिर्द्विजेषु
विश्वासतो नु तदिदं दितिजोऽपि लेभे ।
यत्ते पदाम्बु गिरिशस्य शिरोभिलाल्यं
स त्वं विभो गुरुपुरालय पालयेथाः

prahlādavaṁśajatayā kratubhirdvijeṣu viśvāsato nu tadidaṁ ditijo'pi lebhe yatte padāmbu giriśasya śirobhilālyaṁ sa tvaṁ vibho gurupurālaya pālayethāḥ

By being born in Prahlāda's line, by your trust in sacrifice for brāhmaṇas, this son of Diti got that water from your foot, which is favoured on Giriśa's head. Such you, lord, dwelling in the Guru-pura, protect.
