Hiraṇyākṣa Killed, Hiraṇyakaśipu Rises

10 verses

When Hiraṇyākṣa was killed by you in the boar form, his brother Hiraṇyakaśipu was reduced by sorrow and rage. He took up the deeds that begin with the name Hiraṇya, the asura's vow, the long austerity, the slow grasp of cosmic power. The daśaka prepares Narasimha.

Daśaka 24, Verse 1
हिरण्याक्षे पोत्रीप्रवरवपुषा देव भवता
हते शोकक्रोधग्लपितघृतिरेतस्य सहजः ।
हिरण्यप्रारम्भः कशिपुरमररातिसदसि
प्रतिज्ञामातेने तव किल वधार्थं मुररिपो

hiraṇyākṣe potrīpravaravapuṣā deva bhavatā hate śokakrodhaglapitaghṛtiretasya sahajaḥ hiraṇyaprārambhaḥ kaśipuramararātisadasi pratijñāmātene tava kila vadhārthaṁ muraripo

When Hiraṇyākṣa was killed by you in the form of the great boar, his brother, his composure consumed by grief and rage, beginning with deeds prefixed with 'Hiraṇya', Kaśipu in the assembly of the asura-enemies took a vow for your destruction, slayer of Mura.

Daśaka 24, Verse 2
विधातारं घोरं स खलु तपसित्वा नचिरतः
पुरः साक्षात्कुर्वन्सुरनरमृगाद्यैरनिधनम् ।
वरं लब्ध्वा दृप्तो जगदिह भवन्नायकमिदं
परिक्षुन्दन्निन्द्रादहरत दिवं त्वामगणयन्

vidhātāraṁ ghoraṁ sa khalu tapasitvā nacirataḥ puraḥ sākṣātkurvansuranaramṛgādyairanidhanam varaṁ labdhvā dṛpto jagadiha bhavannāyakamidaṁ parikṣundannindrādaharata divaṁ tvāmagaṇayan

Practising fierce austerity to Brahmā, soon making him appear, gaining a boon of immortality from gods, men, beasts and the rest, proud, crushing this world of which you are lord, he stole heaven, took Indra's place, contemptuous of you.

Daśaka 24, Verse 3
निहन्तुं त्वां भूयस्तव पदमवाप्तस्य च रिपोर्
बहिर्दृष्टेरन्तर्दधिथ हृदये सूक्ष्मवपुषा ।
नदन्नुच्चैस्तत्राप्यखिलभुवनान्ते च मृगयन्
भिया यातं मत्वा स खलु जितकाशी निववृते

nihantuṁ tvāṁ bhūyastava padamavāptasya ca ripor bahirdṛṣṭerantardadhitha hṛdaye sūkṣmavapuṣā nadannuccaistatrāpyakhilabhuvanānte ca mṛgayan bhiyā yātaṁ matvā sa khalu jitakāśī nivavṛte

To kill you, again to him who had reached his place, you, with subtle body, vanished outwardly inside his heart. Roaring loudly, searching even at the world's edge in fear, thinking you had fled, he turned back exulting in victory.

Daśaka 24, Verse 4
ततोऽस्य प्रह्लादः समजनि सुतो गर्भवसतौ
मुनेर्वीणापाणेरधिगतभबद्भक्तिमहिमा ।
स वै जात्या दैत्यः शिशुरपि समेत्य त्वयि रतिं
गतस्त्वद्भक्तानां वरद परमोदाहरणताम्

tato'sya prahlādaḥ samajani suto garbhavasatau munervīṇāpāṇeradhigatabhabadbhaktimahimā sa vai jātyā daityaḥ śiśurapi sametya tvayi ratiṁ gatastvadbhaktānāṁ varada paramodāharaṇatām

Then to him was born Prahlāda, gaining your devotion's greatness in the womb from the sage Nārada with vīṇā in hand. By race an asura, even as a child meeting and giving love to you, the unmatched example among devotees, granter of boons.

Daśaka 24, Verse 5
सुरारीणां हास्यं तव चरणदास्यं निजसुते
स दृष्ट्वा दुष्टात्मा गुरुभिरशिशिक्षच्चिरममुम् ।
गुरुप्रोक्तं चासाविदमिदमभद्राय दृढमि
त्यपाकुर्वन् सर्वं तव चरणभक्त्यैव ववृधे

surārīṇāṁ hāsyaṁ tava caraṇadāsyaṁ nijasute sa dṛṣṭvā duṣṭātmā gurubhiraśiśikṣacciramamum guruproktaṁ cāsāvidamidamabhadrāya dṛḍhami tyapākurvan sarvaṁ tava caraṇabhaktyaiva vavṛdhe

Seeing the laughter of asura-enemies and the service of your feet by his own son, the wretch had teachers train him long. The teacher's word, 'this and this is harmful,' the boy refused; he grew through devotion to your feet.

Daśaka 24, Verse 6
अधीतेषु श्रेष्ठं किमिति परिपृष्टेऽथ तनये
भवद्भक्तिं वर्यामभिगदति पर्याकुलधृतिः ।
गुरुभ्यो रोषित्वा सहजमतिरस्योत्यभिविदन्
वधिपायानस्मिन् व्यतत्नुत भवत्पादशरणे

adhīteṣu śreṣṭhaṁ kimiti paripṛṣṭe'tha tanaye bhavadbhaktiṁ varyāmabhigadati paryākuladhṛtiḥ gurubhyo roṣitvā sahajamatirasyotyabhividan vadhipāyānasmin vyatatnuta bhavatpādaśaraṇe

When asked, 'What is best in your studies?', the son speaking the choicest devotion, the father, agitated, angry at the teachers, knowing his rival mind, contrived deaths against him. The boy took refuge in your feet.

Daśaka 24, Verse 7
स शूलैराविद्धः सुबहु मथितो दिग्गजगणैर्
महासर्पैर्दष्टोऽप्यनशनगराहारविधुतः ।
गिरीन्द्रावक्षिप्तोऽप्यहह परमात्मन्नयि विभो
त्वयि न्यस्तात्मत्वात् किमपि न निपीडामभजत

sa śūlairāviddhaḥ subahu mathito diggajagaṇair mahāsarpairdaṣṭo'pyanaśanagarāhāravidhutaḥ girīndrāvakṣipto'pyahaha paramātmannayi vibho tvayi nyastātmatvāt kimapi na nipīḍāmabhajata

Pierced with much spears, much trampled by the elephant-hosts of the directions, bitten by great snakes, weakened by starvation and poison-food, hurled from mountain peaks, alas, supreme self, lord, having placed his self in you, did not feel the slightest pain.

Daśaka 24, Verse 8
ततः शङ्काविष्टः स पुनरतिदुष्टोऽस्य जनको
गुरूक्त्या तद्गेह किल वरुणपाशैस्तमरुणत् ।
गुरोश्चासान्निध्ये स पुनरनुगान्दैत्यतनयान्
भवद्भक्तेस्तत्त्वं परमपि विज्ञानमशिषत्

tataḥ śaṅkāviṣṭaḥ sa punaratiduṣṭo'sya janako gurūktyā tadgeha kila varuṇapāśaistamaruṇat guroścāsānnidhye sa punaranugāndaityatanayān bhavadbhaktestattvaṁ paramapi vijñānamaśiṣat

Then the wretch, suspicious, terribly evil father, by the teacher's word in the home, bound him with Varuṇa-nooses. In the teacher's absence, he taught the asura-children all about devotion to you.

Daśaka 24, Verse 9
पिता षृण्वन्बालप्रकरमखिलं त्वत्स्तुतिपरं
रुषान्धः प्राहैनं कुलहतक कस्ते बलमिति ।
बलं मे वैकुण्ठस्तव च जगतां चापि स बलं
स एव त्रैलोक्यं सकलमिति धीरोऽयमगदीत्

pitā ṣṛṇvanbālaprakaramakhilaṁ tvatstutiparaṁ ruṣāndhaḥ prāhainaṁ kulahataka kaste balamiti balaṁ me vaikuṇṭhastava ca jagatāṁ cāpi sa balaṁ sa eva trailokyaṁ sakalamiti dhīro'yamagadīt

Hearing the chorus of children all engaged in your praise, blinded by rage, he asked: 'Family-destroyer, who is your strength?' 'My strength is Vaikuṇṭha-Lord, your strength too, the strength of all the worlds, the entire three-worlds-He alone,' so the steadfast one.

Daśaka 24, Verse 10
अरे क्वासौ क्वासौ सकलजगदात्मा हरिरिति
प्रभिन्ते स्म स्तम्भं चलितकरवाळो दितिसुतः ।
अतः पश्चाद्विष्णो न हि वदितुमीशोऽस्मि सहसा
कृपात्मन् विश्वात्मन् पवनपुरवासिन् मृडय माम्

are kvāsau kvāsau sakalajagadātmā haririti prabhinte sma stambhaṁ calitakaravāḻo ditisutaḥ ataḥ paścādviṣṇo na hi vaditumīśo'smi sahasā kṛpātman viśvātman pavanapuravāsin mṛḍaya mām

'Where, where is he, that universal-self Hari?' shouting, splitting the pillar with raised sword, the demon-son. After this, Viṣṇu, I am unable to speak suddenly. Compassionate self, all-self, dweller of the wind-city, soothe me.
