Ajāmila

11 verses

Ajāmila was once a brāhmaṇa walking the path of dharma, a householder. By his teacher's bidding he went into the forest, saw a kulaṭā (an unchaste woman, intoxicated), and fell. The daśaka sets up the famous Bhāgavata story of his salvation by calling his son's name, Nārāyaṇa, at the moment of death.

Daśaka 22, Verse 1
अजामिळो नाम महीसुरः पुरा चरन्विभो धर्म पथान् गृहाश्रमी ।
गुरोर्गिरा काननमेत्य दृष्टवान्सुघृष्टशीलां कुलटां मदाकुलाम्

ajāmiḻo nāma mahīsuraḥ purā caranvibho dharma pathān gṛhāśramī gurorgirā kānanametya dṛṣṭavānsughṛṣṭaśīlāṁ kulaṭāṁ madākulām

Lord, in olden times Ajāmila, a brāhmaṇa, was walking the path of dharma as a householder. By his teacher's word he went into the forest and saw a much-cherished unchaste woman, intoxicated.

Daśaka 22, Verse 2
स्वतः प्रशान्तोऽपि तदाहृताशयः स्वधर्ममुत्सृज्य तया समारमन् ।
अधर्मकारी दशमी भवन्पुनर्दधौ भवन्नामयुते सुते रतिम्

svataḥ praśānto'pi tadāhṛtāśayaḥ svadharmamutsṛjya tayā samāraman adharmakārī daśamī bhavanpunardadhau bhavannāmayute sute ratim

Naturally peaceful, he was carried away by her; abandoning his own dharma, he sported with her. Adharma-doer, having ten sons, he placed his love in the youngest, named after you.

Daśaka 22, Verse 3
स मृत्युकाले यमराजकिङ्करान् भयङ्करांस्त्रीनभिलक्षयन्भिया ।
पुरा मनाक्त्वत्स्मृतिवासनाबलाज्जुहाव नारायणनामकं सुतम्

sa mṛtyukāle yamarājakiṅkarān bhayaṅkarāṁstrīnabhilakṣayanbhiyā purā manāktvatsmṛtivāsanābalājjuhāva nārāyaṇanāmakaṁ sutam

At the time of death, marking with fear three terrifying servants of Yama, by the strength of even slight remembrance of your name, he called out to his son named Nārāyaṇa.

Daśaka 22, Verse 4
दुराशयस्यापि तदात्वनिर्गतत्वदीयनामाक्षरमात्रवैभवात् ।
पुरोऽभिपेतुर्भवदीयपार्षदाश्चतुर्भुजाः पीतपटा मनोरमाः

durāśayasyāpi tadātvanirgatatvadīyanāmākṣaramātravaibhavāt puro'bhipeturbhavadīyapārṣadāścaturbhujāḥ pītapaṭā manoramāḥ

From his mouth, the wretched mind notwithstanding, by the very greatness of the syllables of your name issued, came forth at once your attendants, four-armed, yellow-clad, charming.

Daśaka 22, Verse 5
अमुं च संपाश्य विकर्षतो भतान् विमुञ्चतेत्यारुरुधुर्बलादमी ।
निवारितास्ते च भवज्जनैस्तदा तदीयपापं निखिलं न्यवेदयन्

amuṁ ca saṁpāśya vikarṣato bhatān vimuñcatetyārurudhurbalādamī nivāritāste ca bhavajjanaistadā tadīyapāpaṁ nikhilaṁ nyavedayan

Stopping the binding and dragging away by Yama's servants, the messengers said: 'Release.' Stopped by force, they then narrated all his sins to your servants.

Daśaka 22, Verse 6
भवन्तु पापानि कथं तु निष्कृते कृतेऽपि भो दण्डनमस्ति पण्दिताः ।
न निष्कृतिः किईं विदिता भवादृशामिति प्रभो त्वत्पुरुषा बभाषिरे

bhavantu pāpāni kathaṁ tu niṣkṛte kṛte'pi bho daṇḍanamasti paṇditāḥ na niṣkṛtiḥ kiīṁ viditā bhavādṛśāmiti prabho tvatpuruṣā babhāṣire

'Be there sins; how then is there punishment when atonement has been performed, learned ones? Is not the atonement known to your kind?' Lord, your attendants spoke.

Daśaka 22, Verse 7
श्रुतिस्मृतिभ्यां विहिता व्रतादयः पुनन्ति पापं न लुनन्ति वासनाम् ।
अनन्तसेवा तु निकृन्तति द्वयीमिति प्रभो त्वत्पुरुषा बभाषिरे

śrutismṛtibhyāṁ vihitā vratādayaḥ punanti pāpaṁ na lunanti vāsanām anantasevā tu nikṛntati dvayīmiti prabho tvatpuruṣā babhāṣire

'The vows and rites prescribed by śruti and smṛti purify sin but do not cut off the deep tendency. The serving of the endless one cuts both away.' Lord, your attendants spoke.

Daśaka 22, Verse 8
अनेन भो जन्मसहस्रकोटिभिः कृतेषु पापेष्वपि निष्कृतिः कृता ।
तदग्रहीन्नाम भयाकुलो हरेरिति प्रभो त्वत्पुरुषा बभाषिरे

anena bho janmasahasrakoṭibhiḥ kṛteṣu pāpeṣvapi niṣkṛtiḥ kṛtā tadagrahīnnāma bhayākulo hareriti prabho tvatpuruṣā babhāṣire

'For sins committed even in countless billions of births, atonement was made by him, when he, in fear, took up the name of Hari.' Lord, your attendants spoke.

Daśaka 22, Verse 9
नृणामबुद्ध्यापि मुकुन्दकीर्तनं दहत्यघौघान्महिमास्य तादृशः ।
यथाग्निरेधांसि यथौषधं गदानिति प्रभो त्वत्पुरुषा बभाषिरे

nṛṇāmabuddhyāpi mukundakīrtanaṁ dahatyaghaughānmahimāsya tādṛśaḥ yathāgniredhāṁsi yathauṣadhaṁ gadāniti prabho tvatpuruṣā babhāṣire

'For people, even unintentionally, the chanting of Mukunda burns the floods of sin, such is its greatness, as fire burns fuel, as medicine cures disease.' Lord, your attendants spoke.

Daśaka 22, Verse 10
इतीरितैर्याम्यभटैरपासृते भवद्भटानां च गणे तिरोहिते ।
भवत्स्मृतिं कञ्चन कालमाचरन्भवत्पदं प्रापि भवद्भटैरसौ

itīritairyāmyabhaṭairapāsṛte bhavadbhaṭānāṁ ca gaṇe tirohite bhavatsmṛtiṁ kañcana kālamācaranbhavatpadaṁ prāpi bhavadbhaṭairasau

Thus said, Yama's servants withdrew; the gathering of your attendants vanished. Performing some time the remembrance of you, he reached your seat by your servants' hand.

Daśaka 22, Verse 11
स्वकिङ्गरावेदनशङ्कितो यमस्त्वदङ्घ्रिभक्तेषु न गम्यतामिति ।
स्वकीयभृत्यानशिशिक्षदुच्चकैः स देव वातालय पाहि माम्

svakiṅgarāvedanaśaṅkito yamastvadaṅghribhakteṣu na gamyatāmiti svakīyabhṛtyānaśiśikṣaduccakaiḥ sa deva vātālaya pāhi mām

Yama, fearful from his servants' report, taught his servants loudly: 'Do not approach the devotees of your feet.' Lord of the Wind-house, save me.
