Ilāvṛta-varṣa

12 verses

In the central continent called Ilāvṛta, where the chief inhabitants are women under the lordship of Gauri, you are worshipped by Śarva himself with mantras and praises as Saṅkarṣaṇa. The daśaka traces the cosmic geography toward the centre.

Daśaka 21, Verse 1
मध्योद्भवओ भुव इळावृतनाम्नि वर्षे
गौरीप्रधानवनिताजनमात्रभाजि ।
शर्वेण मन्त्रनुतिभिः सुमुपास्यमानं
सङ्कर्षणात्मकमधीश्वर संश्रये त्वाम्

madhyodbhavao bhuva iḻāvṛtanāmni varṣe gaurīpradhānavanitājanamātrabhāji śarveṇa mantranutibhiḥ sumupāsyamānaṁ saṅkarṣaṇātmakamadhīśvara saṁśraye tvām

Lord of all, I take refuge in you in the central middle of the earth, in the varṣa called Ilāvṛta, populated only by women with Gaurī as the chief, worshipped by Śarva with mantras and praises as Saṅkarṣaṇa.

Daśaka 21, Verse 2
भद्राश्वनामक इळावृतपूर्ववर्षे
भद्रश्रवोभिरृषिभिः परिणूयमानम् ।
कल्पान्तगूढनिगमोद्धरणप्रवीणं
ध्यायामि देव हयशीर्षतनुं भवन्तम्

bhadrāśvanāmaka iḻāvṛtapūrvavarṣe bhadraśravobhirṛṣibhiḥ pariṇūyamānam kalpāntagūḍhanigamoddharaṇapravīṇaṁ dhyāyāmi deva hayaśīrṣatanuṁ bhavantam

I meditate, lord, on you in the form of Hayaśīrṣa, the horse-headed one, in the eastern Bhadrāśva-varṣa from Ilāvṛta, praised by Bhadraśrava and the sages, skilled in lifting up the Vedas hidden at the kalpa's end.

Daśaka 21, Verse 3
ध्यायामि दक्षिणगते हरिवर्षवर्षे
प्राह्लादमुख्यपुरुषैः परिषेव्यमाणम् ।
उत्तुङ्गशान्तधवलाकृतिमेकशुद्ध
ज्ञानप्रदं नरहरिं भगवन् भवन्तम्

dhyāyāmi dakṣiṇagate harivarṣavarṣe prāhlādamukhyapuruṣaiḥ pariṣevyamāṇam uttuṅgaśāntadhavalākṛtimekaśuddha jñānapradaṁ narahariṁ bhagavan bhavantam

I meditate on you, narahari, in the southern Hari-varṣa, served by the lords beginning with Prahlāda; tall, peaceful, white in form, granter of pure single knowledge, lord, my Bhagavān.

Daśaka 21, Verse 4
वर्षे प्रतीचि ललितात्मनि केतुमाले
लीलाविशेषललितस्मितशोभनाङ्गम् ।
लक्ष्म्या प्रजापतिसुतैश्च निषेव्यमाणं
तस्याः प्रियाय धृतकामतनुं भजे त्वाम्

varṣe pratīci lalitātmani ketumāle līlāviśeṣalalitasmitaśobhanāṅgam lakṣmyā prajāpatisutaiśca niṣevyamāṇaṁ tasyāḥ priyāya dhṛtakāmatanuṁ bhaje tvām

In the western Ketumāla-varṣa, of charming play-form, of the body lovely with playful smiles, served by Lakṣmī and the sons of Prajāpati: I worship you, who hold the form of Kāma for her delight.

Daśaka 21, Verse 5
रम्येह्युदीचि खलु रम्यकनाम्नि वर्षे
तद्वर्षनाथमनुवर्यसपर्यमाणम् ।
भक्तैकवत्सलममत्सरहृत्सु भान्तं
मत्स्याकृतिं भुवननाथ भजे भवन्तम्

ramyehyudīci khalu ramyakanāmni varṣe tadvarṣanāthamanuvaryasaparyamāṇam bhaktaikavatsalamamatsarahṛtsu bhāntaṁ matsyākṛtiṁ bhuvananātha bhaje bhavantam

In the lovely northern Ramyaka-varṣa, served with sweet veneration by the manvantara-lord and his retinue, the dearest one to devotees, beyond rivalry, the matsya-form: lord of the world, I worship you.

Daśaka 21, Verse 6
वर्षं हिरण्मयसमाह्वयमौत्तराह
मासीनमद्रिधृतिकर्मठकामठाङ्गम् ।
संसेवते पितृगणप्रवरोऽर्यमायं
तं त्वां भजामि भगवन् परचिन्मयात्मन्

varṣaṁ hiraṇmayasamāhvayamauttarāha māsīnamadridhṛtikarmaṭhakāmaṭhāṅgam saṁsevate pitṛgaṇapravaro'ryamāyaṁ taṁ tvāṁ bhajāmi bhagavan paracinmayātman

In the northernmost Hiraṇmaya-varṣa, with the Kūrma-form bearing the work of holding up the mountain, I worship you, served by the chief of the ancestors, Aryaman; lord, supreme-consciousness self.

Daśaka 21, Verse 7
किं चोत्तरेषु कुरुषु प्रियया धरण्या
संसेवितो महितमन्त्रनुतिप्रभेदैः ।
दंष्ट्राग्रघृष्टघनपृष्ठगरिष्ठवर्ष्मा
त्वं पाहि विज्ञनुतयज्ञवराहमूर्ते

kiṁ cottareṣu kuruṣu priyayā dharaṇyā saṁsevito mahitamantranutiprabhedaiḥ daṁṣṭrāgraghṛṣṭaghanapṛṣṭhagariṣṭhavarṣmā tvaṁ pāhi vijñanutayajñavarāhamūrte

Then in the Uttara-Kuru, served by the dear earth herself with mantras and praises of various kinds: as Varāha, with the cosmic body etched by your tusks-tip carrying the great dense mass; lord, Yajña-Varāha, save me.

Daśaka 21, Verse 8
याम्यां दिशं भजति किंपुरुषाख्यवर्षे
संसेवितो हनुमता दृढभक्तिभाजा ।
सीताभिरामपरमाद्भुतरूपशाली
रामात्मकः परिलसन्परिपाहि विष्णो

yāmyāṁ diśaṁ bhajati kiṁpuruṣākhyavarṣe saṁsevito hanumatā dṛḍhabhaktibhājā sītābhirāmaparamādbhutarūpaśālī rāmātmakaḥ parilasanparipāhi viṣṇo

In the southern direction, in Kiṁpuruṣa-varṣa, served by Hanumān of firm devotion, with the supremely wonderful form pleasing to Sītā, shining as Rāma, Viṣṇu, save me.

Daśaka 21, Verse 9
श्रीनारदेन सह भारतखण्डमुख्यैस्
त्वं सांख्ययोगनुतिभिः समुपास्यमानः ।
आकल्पकालमिह साधुजनाभिरक्षी
नारायणो नरसखः परिपाहि भूमन्

śrīnāradena saha bhāratakhaṇḍamukhyais tvaṁ sāṁkhyayoganutibhiḥ samupāsyamānaḥ ākalpakālamiha sādhujanābhirakṣī nārāyaṇo narasakhaḥ paripāhi bhūman

Worshipped along with Śrī-Nārada by the Bhārata-khaṇḍa chiefs, by Sāṅkhya-yoga praises, until the kalpa's end protector of good people: Nārāyaṇa, friend of Nara, save me, all-pervading one.

Daśaka 21, Verse 10
प्लाक्षेऽर्करूपमयि शाल्मल इन्दुरूपं
द्वीये भजन्ति कुशनामनि वह्निरूपम् ।
क्रौञ्चेऽम्बुरूपमथ वायुमयं च शाके
त्वां ब्रह्मरूपमयि पुष्करनाम्नि लोकाः

plākṣe'rkarūpamayi śālmala indurūpaṁ dvīye bhajanti kuśanāmani vahnirūpam krauñce'mburūpamatha vāyumayaṁ ca śāke tvāṁ brahmarūpamayi puṣkaranāmni lokāḥ

In Plākṣa they worship you as the sun's form; as the moon's in Śālmala; in the second, in Kuśa, as fire's form; in Krauñca, as water; in Śāka, as wind; and lord, in Puṣkara, as Brahmā.

Daśaka 21, Verse 11
सर्वैर्ध्रुवीदिभिरुडुप्रकरैर्ग्रहैश्च
पुच्छादिकेष्ववयवेष्वभिकल्प्यमानैः ।
त्वं शिंशुमारवपुषा महतामुपास्यः
सन्ध्यासु रुन्धि नरकं मम सिन्धुशायैन्

sarvairdhruvīdibhiruḍuprakarairgrahaiśca pucchādikeṣvavayaveṣvabhikalpyamānaiḥ tvaṁ śiṁśumāravapuṣā mahatāmupāsyaḥ sandhyāsu rundhi narakaṁ mama sindhuśāyain

Worshipped by the great with the form of the dolphin (śiṁśumāra), with Dhruva and the rest of stars and planets imagined as tail and limbs: at the twilights, hold back hell from me, ocean-sleeper.

Daśaka 21, Verse 12
पाताळमूलभुवि शेषतनुं भवन्तं
लोकैककुण्डलविराजिसहस्रशीर्षम् ।
नीलाम्बरं धृतहलं भुजगाङ्गनाभिर्
जुष्टं भजे हर गदान्गुरुगेहनाथ

pātāḻamūlabhuvi śeṣatanuṁ bhavantaṁ lokaikakuṇḍalavirājisahasraśīrṣam nīlāmbaraṁ dhṛtahalaṁ bhujagāṅganābhir juṣṭaṁ bhaje hara gadāngurugehanātha

In the depth of pātāla, the Śeṣa form, the world-jewel-shining thousand heads, dark blue garment, holding the plough, served by serpent-women: I worship you. Take away disease, lord of the Wind-house.
