The House of Priyavrata

10 verses

Priyavrata, the dear-son, became the source of Āgnīdhra and Nābhi. You, granter of all wishes, were seen by Nābhi when he performed the great sacrifice for your delight alone. The daśaka begins the geographical Bhāgavata: the world's continents named after Priyavrata's grandsons.

Daśaka 20, Verse 1
प्रियव्रतस्य प्रियपुत्रभूतादाग्नीध्रराजादुदितो हि नाभिः ।
त्वां दृष्टवानिष्टदमिष्टमध्ये तवैव तुष्ट्यै कृतयज्ञकर्मा

priyavratasya priyaputrabhūtādāgnīdhrarājādudito hi nābhiḥ tvāṁ dṛṣṭavāniṣṭadamiṣṭamadhye tavaiva tuṣṭyai kṛtayajñakarmā

From Priyavrata's dear son Āgnīdhra, the king, was born Nābhi. He saw you, granter of all wishes, in the midst of those wishing well, having performed the sacrifice for your delight alone.

Daśaka 20, Verse 2
अभिष्टुतस्तत्र मुनीश्वरैस्त्वं राज्ञा स्वतुल्यं सुतमर्थ्यमानः ।
स्वयं जनिष्येऽहमिति ब्रुवाणस्तिरोदधा बर्हिषि विश्वमूर्ते

abhiṣṭutastatra munīśvaraistvaṁ rājñā svatulyaṁ sutamarthyamānaḥ svayaṁ janiṣye'hamiti bruvāṇastirodadhā barhiṣi viśvamūrte

There, praised by the lords of sages, asked by the king for a son equal to himself, you said: 'I myself shall be born.' Lord of the cosmic-form, you vanished into the sacrificial grass.

Daśaka 20, Verse 3
नाभिप्रियायामथ मेरुदेव्यां त्वमंशतोऽभूरृषभाभिधानः ।
अलोकसामान्यगुणप्रभावप्रभाविताशेषजनप्रमोदः

nābhipriyāyāmatha merudevyāṁ tvamaṁśato'bhūrṛṣabhābhidhānaḥ alokasāmānyaguṇaprabhāvaprabhāvitāśeṣajanapramodaḥ

Then in Nābhi's beloved Merudevī, by your portion, you became, with the name Ṛṣabha, of unworld-uncommon virtue and might, gladdening all beings.

Daśaka 20, Verse 4
त्वयि त्रिलोकीभृति राज्य्भारं निधाय नाभिः सह मेरुदेव्या ।
तपोवनं प्राप्य भवन्निषेवी गतः किलानन्दपदं पदं ते

tvayi trilokībhṛti rājybhāraṁ nidhāya nābhiḥ saha merudevyā tapovanaṁ prāpya bhavanniṣevī gataḥ kilānandapadaṁ padaṁ te

Placing on yourself, who held the three worlds, the burden of kingdom, Nābhi reached the forest of austerity with Merudevī, serving you, and reached the place of bliss, your seat.

Daśaka 20, Verse 5
इन्द्रस्त्वदुत्कर्षकृतादमर्षाद्ववर्ष नास्मिन्नजनाभवर्षे ।
यदा तदा त्वं निजयोगशक्त्या स्ववर्षमेनद्व्यदधाः सुवर्षम्

indrastvadutkarṣakṛtādamarṣādvavarṣa nāsminnajanābhavarṣe yadā tadā tvaṁ nijayogaśaktyā svavarṣamenadvyadadhāḥ suvarṣam

Indra, by the resentment of your superiority, did not rain in this Ajanābha-varṣa. Then you, by your own yoga-power, made it a beautiful varṣa.

Daśaka 20, Verse 6
जितेन्द्रदत्तां कमनीं जयन्तीमथोद्वहन्नात्मरताशयोऽपि ।
अजीजनत्तत्र शतं तनूजान्येषां क्षितीशो भरतोऽग्रजन्मा

jitendradattāṁ kamanīṁ jayantīmathodvahannātmaratāśayo'pi ajījanattatra śataṁ tanūjānyeṣāṁ kṣitīśo bharato'grajanmā

Carrying off Indra's sent maiden Jayantī, with mind absorbed in self though enjoyer, you fathered there a hundred sons, of whom Bharata was the elder, the lord of earth.

Daśaka 20, Verse 7
नवाभवन्योगिवरा नवान्ये त्वपालयन्भारतवर्षखण्डान् ।
सैका त्वशीतिस्तव शेषपुत्रास्तपोबलाद्भूसुरभूयमीयुः

navābhavanyogivarā navānye tvapālayanbhāratavarṣakhaṇḍān saikā tvaśītistava śeṣaputrāstapobalādbhūsurabhūyamīyuḥ

Nine became great yogis; nine others ruled the divisions of Bhārata-varṣa; eighty-one of the rest of your sons, by tapas-strength, attained the state of brāhmaṇas.

Daśaka 20, Verse 8
उक्त्वा सुतेभ्योऽथ मुनीन्द्रमध्ये विरक्तिभक्त्यन्वितमुक्तिमार्गम् ।
स्वयं गतः पारमहंस्यवृत्तिमधा जडोन्मत्तपिशाचचर्याम्

uktvā sutebhyo'tha munīndramadhye viraktibhaktyanvitamuktimārgam svayaṁ gataḥ pāramahaṁsyavṛttimadhā jaḍonmattapiśācacaryām

Then, having spoken to the sons in the company of the lords of sages the path of liberation marked by detachment, devotion, and knowledge, you yourself went; you took up paramahaṁsa-practice with the conduct of one mad, idiotic, demonic.

Daśaka 20, Verse 9
परात्मभूतोऽपि परोपदेशं कुर्वन्भवन्सर्वनिरस्यमानः ।
विकारहीनो विचचार कृत्स्नां महीमहीनात्मरसाभिलीनः

parātmabhūto'pi paropadeśaṁ kurvanbhavansarvanirasyamānaḥ vikārahīno vicacāra kṛtsnāṁ mahīmahīnātmarasābhilīnaḥ

Though the supreme self, giving instruction to others, while being criticized by all, free of modification, you wandered the entire earth, absorbed in the rasa of unbroken self.

Daśaka 20, Verse 10
शयुव्रतं गोमृगकाकचर्यां चिरं चरन्नाप्य परं स्वरूपम् ।
दवाहृताङ्गः कुटकाचले त्वं तापान्ममापाकुरु वातनाथ

śayuvrataṁ gomṛgakākacaryāṁ ciraṁ carannāpya paraṁ svarūpam davāhṛtāṅgaḥ kuṭakācale tvaṁ tāpānmamāpākuru vātanātha

Long observing the resting-vow with the practices of cow, deer, and crow, attaining your supreme form, your body burned by forest-fire, on the Kuṭaka mountain. Lord of the Wind, remove my torment.
