The Lord's Form, Head to Toe

10 verses

Mēlpattūr describes the form he has been seeing in the śrīkōvil at Guruvāyur. Crown rivalling the sun. The forehead's vertical mark above. Eyes troubled with compassion, a moist smile rising. Well-shaped nose; cheek-jewels swung; the kaustubha glowing at the chest; the forest-garland; the śrīvatsa mark. The whole body in one inventory, taken before the philosophical work of the rest of the cycle begins. The form, he says, is what I worship.

Daśaka 2, Verse 1
सूर्यस्पर्धिकिरीटमूर्ध्वतिलकप्रोद्भासिफालान्तरं
कारुण्याकुलनेत्रमार्द्रहसितोल्लासं सुनासापुटम् ।
गण्डोद्यन्मकराभकुण्डलयुगं कण्ठोज्वलत्कौस्तुभं
त्वद्रूपं वनमाल्यहारपटलश्रीवत्सदीप्रं भजे

sūryaspardhikirīṭamūrdhvatilakaprodbhāsiphālāntaraṁ kāruṇyākulanetramārdrahasitollāsaṁ sunāsāpuṭam gaṇḍodyanmakarābhakuṇḍalayugaṁ kaṇṭhojvalatkaustubhaṁ tvadrūpaṁ vanamālyahārapaṭalaśrīvatsadīpraṁ bhaje

I worship that form of yours: the crown of the sun, the bright forehead-mark above, the eyes swollen with compassion and the gentle rising smile, the shapely nose, the makara-shaped earrings on the cheeks, the kaustubha glowing at the throat, the forest-garland and the śrīvatsa-mark on the chest.

Daśaka 2, Verse 2
केयूराङ्गदकङ्कणोत्तममहारत्नाङ्गुलीयाङ्कित
श्रीमद्बाहुचतुष्कसङ्गतगदाशङ्खारिपङ्केरुहाम् ।
काञ्चित्काञ्चिनकाञ्चिलाञ्च्छितलसत्पीताम्बरालम्बिनी
मालम्बे विमलाम्बुजद्युतिपदां मूर्तिं तवार्तिच्छिदम्

keyūrāṅgadakaṅkaṇottamamahāratnāṅgulīyāṅkita śrīmadbāhucatuṣkasaṅgatagadāśaṅkhāripaṅkeruhām kāñcitkāñcinakāñcilāñcchitalasatpītāmbarālambinī mālambe vimalāmbujadyutipadāṁ mūrtiṁ tavārticchidam

I take refuge in your form which removes all sorrow: four blessed arms marked by armlets, bracelets, and gem-studded rings, holding the mace, conch, discus and lotus; girdled at the waist with a brilliant golden belt, the yellow garment falling below; feet luminous as a fresh lotus.

Daśaka 2, Verse 3
यत्त्रैलोक्यमहीयसोऽपि महितं सम्मोहनं मोहनात्
कान्तं कान्तिनिधानतोऽपि मधुरं माधुर्यधुर्यादपि ।
सौन्दर्योत्तरतोऽपि सुन्दरतरं त्वद्रूपमाश्चर्यतोऽ
प्याश्चर्यं भुवने न कस्य कुतुकं पुष्णाति विष्णो विभो

yattrailokyamahīyaso'pi mahitaṁ sammohanaṁ mohanāt kāntaṁ kāntinidhānato'pi madhuraṁ mādhuryadhuryādapi saundaryottarato'pi sundarataraṁ tvadrūpamāścaryato' pyāścaryaṁ bhuvane na kasya kutukaṁ puṣṇāti viṣṇo vibho

More glorious than the three worlds combined, more bewitching than the bewitcher, more lovely than loveliness itself, sweeter than sweetness, more beautiful than beauty, more astonishing than astonishment: in this whole world, whose curiosity does your form not awaken?

Daśaka 2, Verse 4
तत्तादृङ्मधुरात्मकं तव वपुः सम्प्राप्य संपन्मयी
सा देवी परमोत्सुका चिरतरं नाऽस्ते स्वभक्तेष्वपि ।
तेनास्या बत कष्टमच्युत विभो त्वद्रूपमानोज्ञक
प्रेमस्थैर्यमयादचापलबलाच्चापल्यवार्तोदभूत्

tattādṛṅmadhurātmakaṁ tava vapuḥ samprāpya saṁpanmayī sā devī paramotsukā cirataraṁ nā'ste svabhakteṣvapi tenāsyā bata kaṣṭamacyuta vibho tvadrūpamānojñaka premasthairyamayādacāpalabalāccāpalyavārtodabhūt

On reaching such a sweet form of yours, fortune-bearing Lakṣmī becomes most eager and would never leave your devotees again. Yet, inconstant by name, she is unable to settle even there. Your form, lord, is more enchanting than her usual fickleness.

Daśaka 2, Verse 5
लक्ष्मीस्तावकरामणीयकहृतैवेयं परेष्वस्थिरे
त्यस्मिन्नन्यदपि प्रमाणमधुना वक्ष्यामि लक्ष्मीपते ।
ये त्वद्ध्यानगुणानुकीर्तनरसासक्ता हि भक्ता जना
स्तेष्वेषा वसति स्थिरैव दयितप्रस्तावदत्तादरा

lakṣmīstāvakarāmaṇīyakahṛtaiveyaṁ pareṣvasthire tyasminnanyadapi pramāṇamadhunā vakṣyāmi lakṣmīpate ye tvaddhyānaguṇānukīrtanarasāsaktā hi bhaktā janā steṣveṣā vasati sthiraiva dayitaprastāvadattādarā

It is not only that Lakṣmī, drawn by your beauty, abandons others. There is another proof I will give you, lord of Lakṣmī: in those devotees absorbed in singing your praises and contemplating your virtues, she settles permanently, attentive at the very mention of her beloved.

Daśaka 2, Verse 6
एवंभूतमनोज्ञतानवसुधानिष्यन्दसन्दोहनं
त्वद्रूपं परचिद्रसायनमयं चेतोहरं श्रृण्वताम् ।
सद्यः प्रेरयते मतिं मदयते रोमाञ्चयत्यङ्गकं
व्यासिञ्चत्यपि शीतबाष्पविसरैरानन्दमूर्च्छोद्भवैः

evaṁbhūtamanojñatānavasudhāniṣyandasandohanaṁ tvadrūpaṁ paracidrasāyanamayaṁ cetoharaṁ śrṛṇvatām sadyaḥ prerayate matiṁ madayate romāñcayatyaṅgakaṁ vyāsiñcatyapi śītabāṣpavisarairānandamūrcchodbhavaiḥ

Such a sweet form, the very nectar of consciousness flowing out, bewitches the mind of those who hear of it. At once it stirs the intellect, intoxicates it, raises hairs on the body, and pours out cool tears born of overflowing bliss.

Daśaka 2, Verse 7
एवम्भूततया हि भक्त्यभिहितो योगः स योगद्वयत्
कर्मज्ञानमयाद्भृशोत्तमतरो योगीश्वरैर्गीयते ।
सौन्दर्यैकरसात्मके त्वयि खलु प्रेमप्रकर्षात्मिका
भक्तिर्निश्रममेव विश्वपुरुषैर्लभ्या रमावल्लभ

evambhūtatayā hi bhaktyabhihito yogaḥ sa yogadvayat karmajñānamayādbhṛśottamataro yogīśvarairgīyate saundaryaikarasātmake tvayi khalu premaprakarṣātmikā bhaktirniśramameva viśvapuruṣairlabhyā ramāvallabha

Such bhakti is the yoga the masters call by name. Higher than the two yogas of action and knowledge, the masters of yoga sing it. In you, who are the single essence of all beauty, devotion intense with the height of love, the path most easy for embodied beings, easily obtained.

Daśaka 2, Verse 8
निष्कामं नियतस्वधर्मचरणं यत्कर्मयोगाभिधं
तद्दूरेत्यफलं यदौपनिषदज्ञानोपलभ्यं पुनः ।
तत्त्वव्यक्ततया सुदुर्गमतरं चित्तस्य तस्माद्विभो
त्वत्प्रेमात्मकभक्तिरेव सततं स्वदीयसी श्रेयसी

niṣkāmaṁ niyatasvadharmacaraṇaṁ yatkarmayogābhidhaṁ taddūretyaphalaṁ yadaupaniṣadajñānopalabhyaṁ punaḥ tattvavyaktatayā sudurgamataraṁ cittasya tasmādvibho tvatpremātmakabhaktireva satataṁ svadīyasī śreyasī

Selfless action performed as one's own duty, called karma-yoga, is far away and yields no fruit; the knowledge taught by the Upaniṣads is hard to obtain; even when known, the mind cannot grasp it. So, lord, devotion full of love for you alone is the closest path to your own being.

Daśaka 2, Verse 9
अत्यायासकराणि कर्मपटलान्याचर्य निर्यन्मलाः
बोधे भक्तिपथेऽथवाप्युचिततामायान्ति किं तावता ।
क्लिष्ट्वा तर्कपथे परं तव वपुर्ब्रह्माख्यमन्ये पुन
श्चित्तार्द्रत्वमृते विचिन्त्य बहुभिः सिध्यन्ति जन्मान्तरैः

atyāyāsakarāṇi karmapaṭalānyācarya niryanmalāḥ bodhe bhaktipathe'thavāpyucitatāmāyānti kiṁ tāvatā kliṣṭvā tarkapathe paraṁ tava vapurbrahmākhyamanye puna ścittārdratvamṛte vicintya bahubhiḥ sidhyanti janmāntaraiḥ

Performing endless toilsome rites, do they become pure and reach the path of awakening or devotion? Hardly. Through the path of reasoning alone, contemplating your form as the formless Brahman, without softening the heart, others struggle to reach success.

Daśaka 2, Verse 10
त्वद्भक्तिस्तु कथारसामृतज्ञरीनिर्मज्जनेन स्वयं
सिद्ध्यन्ती विमलप्रषोधपदवीमक्लेशतस्तन्वती ।
सद्यः सिद्धिकरी जयत्ययि विभो सैवास्तु मे त्वत्पद
प्रेमप्रौढिरसार्द्रता द्रुततरं वातालयाधीश्वर

tvadbhaktistu kathārasāmṛtajñarīnirmajjanena svayaṁ siddhyantī vimalapraṣodhapadavīmakleśatastanvatī sadyaḥ siddhikarī jayatyayi vibho saivāstu me tvatpada premaprauḍhirasārdratā drutataraṁ vātālayādhīśvara

Devotion to you, drinking the nectar of your stories, accomplishes itself; effortlessly opens the path of clear awakening; gives instant attainment. May this very devotion, ripened with the love of your feet, take me quickly. Lord of the Wind-house, swiftly remove all afflictions.
