The Birth of Beings

10 verses

Brahmā, his strength increased by your grace, brought forth from the lotus the bodies of beings. Plants and trees, the species of animals, the human kinds, and the orders of gods. The daśaka completes the early creation sequence; from here the work moves to the visiting of Vaikuṇṭha by the four Kumāras.

Daśaka 10, Verse 1
वैकुण्ठ वर्धितबलोऽथ भवत्प्रसादा
दम्भोजयोनिरसृजत्किल जीवदेहान् ।
स्थास्नूनि भूरुहमयानि तथा तिरश्चां
जातिं मनुष्यनिवहानपि देवभेदान्

vaikuṇṭha vardhitabalo'tha bhavatprasādā dambhojayonirasṛjatkila jīvadehān sthāsnūni bhūruhamayāni tathā tiraścāṁ jātiṁ manuṣyanivahānapi devabhedān

Vaikuṇṭha-lord, his strength increased by your grace, the lotus-born then made the bodies of living beings: stationary kinds, those of trees, the species of animals, the multitudes of humans, and the various gods.

Daśaka 10, Verse 2
मिथ्याग्रहास्मिमतिरागविकोपभीति
रज्ञानवृत्तिमिति पञ्चविधां स सृष्ट्वा ।
उद्दामतामसपदार्थविधानदून
स्तेने त्वदीयचरणस्मरणं विशुद्ध्यै

mithyāgrahāsmimatirāgavikopabhīti rajñānavṛttimiti pañcavidhāṁ sa sṛṣṭvā uddāmatāmasapadārthavidhānadūna stene tvadīyacaraṇasmaraṇaṁ viśuddhyai

He created five kinds of misperception: false grasping, ego-sense, attachment, hatred, fear, and ignorance-tendency. He, distressed by this fierce tāmasic creation, did the remembering of your feet for purification.

Daśaka 10, Verse 3
तावत्ससर्ज मनसा सनकं सनन्दं
भूयं सनातनमुनिं च सनत्कुमारम् ।
ते सृष्टिकर्मणि तु तेन नियुज्यमाना
स्त्वत्पादभक्तिरसिका जगृहुर्न वाणीम्

tāvatsasarja manasā sanakaṁ sanandaṁ bhūyaṁ sanātanamuniṁ ca sanatkumāram te sṛṣṭikarmaṇi tu tena niyujyamānā stvatpādabhaktirasikā jagṛhurna vāṇīm

Then he created from his mind Sanaka, Sananda, Sanātana the sage, and Sanatkumāra. They, when employed in the work of creation, being lovers of the rasa of devotion to your feet, did not accept the word.

Daśaka 10, Verse 4
तावत्प्रकोपमुदितं प्रतिरुन्धतोऽस्य
भ्रूमध्यतोऽजनि मृडो भवदेकदेशः ।
नामानि मे कुरु पदानि च हा विरिञ्चे
त्यादौ रुरोद किल तेन स रुद्रनामा

tāvatprakopamuditaṁ pratirundhato'sya bhrūmadhyato'jani mṛḍo bhavadekadeśaḥ nāmāni me kuru padāni ca hā viriñce tyādau ruroda kila tena sa rudranāmā

Then, from rage that arose against his stoppers, from between his brows, was born Mṛḍa, an aspect of you. 'Give me names and seats, ah Brahmā,' he wept. So he received the name Rudra.

Daśaka 10, Verse 5
एकादशाह्वयतया च विभिन्नरूपं
रुद्रं विधाय दयिता वनिताश्च दत्त्वा ।
तावन्त्यदत्त च पदानि भवत्प्रणुन्नः
प्राह प्रजाविरचनाय च सादरं तम्

ekādaśāhvayatayā ca vibhinnarūpaṁ rudraṁ vidhāya dayitā vanitāśca dattvā tāvantyadatta ca padāni bhavatpraṇunnaḥ prāha prajāviracanāya ca sādaraṁ tam

Making him into eleven different forms by the eleven names, giving them dear consorts and that many seats, urged by you, he addressed him with care, for the production of beings.

Daśaka 10, Verse 6
रुद्राभिसृष्टभयदाकृतिरुद्रसंघ
संपूर्यमाणाभुवनत्रयभीतचेताः ।
मा मा प्रजाः सृज तपश्चर मङ्गलाये
त्याचष्ट तं कमलभूर्भवदीरितात्मा

rudrābhisṛṣṭabhayadākṛtirudrasaṁgha saṁpūryamāṇābhuvanatrayabhītacetāḥ mā mā prajāḥ sṛja tapaścara maṅgalāye tyācaṣṭa taṁ kamalabhūrbhavadīritātmā

But when the host of Rudras, of fearsome appearance, began to fill and frighten the three worlds, the lotus-born, your mind speaking through him, said: 'Do not, do not produce beings; perform austerity for auspiciousness.' So he addressed Rudra.

Daśaka 10, Verse 7
तस्याथ सर्गरसिकस्य मरीचिरत्रि
स्तत्राङ्गिराः क्रतुमिनिः पुलहः पुलस्त्यः ।
अङ्गादजायत भृगुश्च वसिष्ठदक्षौ
श्रीनारदश्च भगवन् भवदंघ्रिदासः

tasyātha sargarasikasya marīciratri statrāṅgirāḥ kratuminiḥ pulahaḥ pulastyaḥ aṅgādajāyata bhṛguśca vasiṣṭhadakṣau śrīnāradaśca bhagavan bhavadaṁghridāsaḥ

Then, of him eager for creation, came forth Marīci, Atri, Aṅgiras, the sage Kratu, Pulaha, Pulastya. From his limb arose Bhṛgu, Vasiṣṭha, Dakṣa, and Śrī Nārada the lord, the servant of your feet.

Daśaka 10, Verse 8
धर्मादिकानभ्सृजन्नथ कर्दमं च
वाणीं विधाय विधिरङ्गजसङ्कुलोऽभूत् ।
त्वद्बोधितैः सनकदक्षमुखैस्तनूजै
रुद्बोधितश्च विरराम तमो विमुञ्चन्

dharmādikānabhsṛjannatha kardamaṁ ca vāṇīṁ vidhāya vidhiraṅgajasaṅkulo'bhūt tvadbodhitaiḥ sanakadakṣamukhaistanūjai rudbodhitaśca virarāma tamo vimuñcan

Producing dharma and the rest, he made Kardama; the goddess Vāṇī (Speech) he placed; Vidhi was deluded by his own daughter. By the awakening of Sanaka, Dakṣa, and the other sons whom you instructed, he stopped, leaving off tamas.

Daśaka 10, Verse 9
वेदान्पुराणनिवहानपि सर्वविद्याः
कुर्वन्निजाननगणाच्चतुराननोऽसौ ।
पुत्रेषु तेषु विनिधाय स सर्गवृद्धि
मप्राप्नुवंस्तव पदाम्बुजमाश्रितोऽभूत्

vedānpurāṇanivahānapi sarvavidyāḥ kurvannijānanagaṇāccaturānano'sau putreṣu teṣu vinidhāya sa sargavṛddhi maprāpnuvaṁstava padāmbujamāśrito'bhūt

Producing the Vedas, the Purāṇas, and all the sciences, by the multitude of his own faces, the four-faced one placed them in his sons. Not himself attaining the increase of creation, he took refuge at your lotus feet.

Daśaka 10, Verse 10
जानन्नुपायमथ देहमजो विभज्य
स्त्रीपुंसभावमभजन्मनुतद्वधूभ्याम् ।
ताभ्यां च मानुषकुलानि विवर्धयंस्त्वं
गोविन्द मारुतपुरेश निरुन्धि रोगान्

jānannupāyamatha dehamajo vibhajya strīpuṁsabhāvamabhajanmanutadvadhūbhyām tābhyāṁ ca mānuṣakulāni vivardhayaṁstvaṁ govinda mārutapureśa nirundhi rogān

Knowing the way, the unborn one divided his body into male and female, took the form of Manu and his consort. From those two, multiplying the human races; you, Govinda, lord of the Wind-house, hold back disease.
