Brahmā on the Lotus

10 verses

Brahmā sat on the lotus from your navel and could not see whence the lotus had come, since he was not yet seeing inward. Out of curiosity to glimpse you, he turned his face to each of the four directions and so gained the four faces by which he is known.

Daśaka 9, Verse 1
स्थितः स कमलोद्भवस्तव हि नाभिपङ्केरुहे
कुतः स्विदिदमम्बुधावुदितमित्यनालोकायन् ।
तदीक्षणकुतूहलात्प्रतिदिशं विवृत्तानन
श्चतुर्वदनतामगाद्विकसदष्टदृष्ट्यम्बुजाम्

sthitaḥ sa kamalodbhavastava hi nābhipaṅkeruhe kutaḥ svididamambudhāvuditamityanālokāyan tadīkṣaṇakutūhalātpratidiśaṁ vivṛttānana ścaturvadanatāmagādvikasadaṣṭadṛṣṭyambujām

He, the lotus-born, sat on your navel-lotus. 'Where is this from? It rose in this ocean.' Not seeing the source, with curiosity to look, turning his face in each direction, he gained the four-faced state, with his eight eyes blossoming as lotuses.

Daśaka 9, Verse 2
महार्णवविघूर्णितं कमलमेव तत्केवलं
विलोक्य तदुपाश्रयं तव तनुं तु नालोकयन् ।
क एष कमलोदरे महति निस्सहायो ह्यहं
कुतः स्विदिदमम्बुजं समजनीति चिन्तामगात्

mahārṇavavighūrṇitaṁ kamalameva tatkevalaṁ vilokya tadupāśrayaṁ tava tanuṁ tu nālokayan ka eṣa kamalodare mahati nissahāyo hyahaṁ kutaḥ svididamambujaṁ samajanīti cintāmagāt

Tossed about in the great ocean, seeing only the lotus, looking for the support of his own seat but not seeing your body, 'who is this in the lotus's centre, helpless, alone, and where is this lotus from?', he wondered.

Daśaka 9, Verse 3
अमुष्य हि सरोरुहः किमपि कारणं सम्भवे
दितिस्म कृतनिश्चयः स खलु नाळरन्ध्राध्वना ।
स्वयोगबलविद्यया समवरूढवान्प्रौढधीः
त्वदीयमतिमोहनं न तु कळेबरं दृष्टवान्

amuṣya hi saroruhaḥ kimapi kāraṇaṁ sambhave ditisma kṛtaniścayaḥ sa khalu nāḻarandhrādhvanā svayogabalavidyayā samavarūḍhavānprauḍhadhīḥ tvadīyamatimohanaṁ na tu kaḻebaraṁ dṛṣṭavān

He decided there must be some cause for this lotus's coming. The wise one, by his own yogic power and knowledge, descended through the hollow of the lotus-stalk. But your most-bewildering body he did not see.

Daśaka 9, Verse 4
ततस्सकलनाळिकाविवरमार्गगो मार्गयन्
प्रयस्य शतवत्सरं किमपि नैव संदृष्टवान् ।
निवृत्य कमलोदरे सुखनिषण्ण एकाग्रधीः
समाधिबलमादधे भवदनुग्रहैकाग्रही

tatassakalanāḻikāvivaramārgago mārgayan prayasya śatavatsaraṁ kimapi naiva saṁdṛṣṭavān nivṛtya kamalodare sukhaniṣaṇṇa ekāgradhīḥ samādhibalamādadhe bhavadanugrahaikāgrahī

Then, going through every fibre and channel, searching for a hundred years, he saw nothing at all. Returning, sitting at the lotus's centre with one-pointed mind, he established samādhi, eager only for your grace.

Daśaka 9, Verse 5
शतेन परिवत्सरैर्दृढसमाधिबन्धोल्लसत्
प्रबोधविशदीकृतः स खलु पद्मिनीसम्भवः ।
अदृष्टचरमद्भुतं तव हि रूपमन्तर्दृशा
व्यचष्ट परितुष्टधीर्भुजगभोगभागाश्रयम्

śatena parivatsarairdṛḍhasamādhibandhollasat prabodhaviśadīkṛtaḥ sa khalu padminīsambhavaḥ adṛṣṭacaramadbhutaṁ tava hi rūpamantardṛśā vyacaṣṭa parituṣṭadhīrbhujagabhogabhāgāśrayam

Through a hundred divine years of firm samādhi, his swelling clear awakening, the lotus-born, at last saw with the inner eye your wondrous form, never seen before, resting on the body of the king of serpents, his heart full of contentment.

Daśaka 9, Verse 6
किरीटमुकुटोल्लसत्कटकहारकेयूरयुञ्
मणिस्फुरितमेखलं सुपरिवीतपीतांबरम् ।
कलायकुसुमप्रभं गलतलोल्लसत्कौस्तुभं
वपुस्तदयि भावये कमलजन्मने दर्शितम्

kirīṭamukuṭollasatkaṭakahārakeyūrayuñ maṇisphuritamekhalaṁ suparivītapītāṁbaram kalāyakusumaprabhaṁ galatalollasatkaustubhaṁ vapustadayi bhāvaye kamalajanmane darśitam

I picture that body shown to the lotus-born: with crown shining, kaṭaka-bracelets, necklace, armlet; jewel-shining girdle; finely worn yellow garment; the colour of the kalāya flower; the kaustubha-jewel shining at the throat.

Daśaka 9, Verse 7
श्रुतिप्रकरदर्शितप्रचुरवैभव श्रीपते
हरे जय जय प्रभो पदमुपैषि दिष्ट्या दृशोः ।
कुरुष्व धियमाशु मे भुवननिर्मितौ कर्मठा
मिति द्रुहिणवर्णितस्वगुणबंहिमा पाहि माम्

śrutiprakaradarśitapracuravaibhava śrīpate hare jaya jaya prabho padamupaiṣi diṣṭyā dṛśoḥ kuruṣva dhiyamāśu me bhuvananirmitau karmaṭhā miti druhiṇavarṇitasvaguṇabaṁhimā pāhi mām

Lord whose great glory the rows of scriptures attest, victory, victory, lord. By good fortune you have come to my sight. Place your wisdom in me at once. I am willing in the work of making the worlds. So Brahmā praised your virtues. Save me.

Daśaka 9, Verse 8
लभस्व भुवनत्रयीरचनदक्षतामक्षतां
गृहाण मदनुग्रहं कुरु तपश्च भूयो विधे ।
भवत्वखिलसाधनी मयि च भक्तिरत्युत्कटे
त्युदीर्य गिरमादधा मुदितचेतसं वेधसम्

labhasva bhuvanatrayīracanadakṣatāmakṣatāṁ gṛhāṇa madanugrahaṁ kuru tapaśca bhūyo vidhe bhavatvakhilasādhanī mayi ca bhaktiratyutkaṭe tyudīrya giramādadhā muditacetasaṁ vedhasam

'May you become unfalteringly skilled in making the three worlds. Take my favour. Practise more austerity. May my devotion become extreme in you, the means of all,' you spoke, gladdening the heart of Brahmā the creator.

Daśaka 9, Verse 9
शतं कृततपास्ततः स खलु दिव्यसंवत्सरा
नवाप्य च तपोबलं मतिबलं च पूर्वाधिकम् ।
उदीक्ष्य किल कम्पितं पयसि पङ्कजं वायुना
भवद्बलविजृम्भितः पवनपाथसी पीतवान्

śataṁ kṛtatapāstataḥ sa khalu divyasaṁvatsarā navāpya ca tapobalaṁ matibalaṁ ca pūrvādhikam udīkṣya kila kampitaṁ payasi paṅkajaṁ vāyunā bhavadbalavijṛmbhitaḥ pavanapāthasī pītavān

Doing tapasya for a hundred divine years, gaining the strength of austerity and the strength of intellect greater than before, seeing the lotus shaken by the wind in the water, drawing on your power, the wind-and-water-Drinker.

Daśaka 9, Verse 10
तवैव कृपया पुनः सरसिजेन तेनैव सः
प्रकल्प्य भुवनत्रयीं प्रववृते प्रजानिर्मितौ ।
तथाविधकृपाभरो गुरुमरुत्पुराधीश्वर
त्वमाशु परिपाहि मां गुरुदयोक्षितैरीक्षितैः

tavaiva kṛpayā punaḥ sarasijena tenaiva saḥ prakalpya bhuvanatrayīṁ pravavṛte prajānirmitau tathāvidhakṛpābharo gurumarutpurādhīśvara tvamāśu paripāhi māṁ gurudayokṣitairīkṣitaiḥ

By your very grace, by that very lotus, he then arranged the three worlds and proceeded to the production of beings. Possessor of such great compassion, lord of the Wind-house, may you, with the look of compassion, swiftly protect me.
