Pada 254

“Your glance pierces me, O prince! Dark and keen-edged, your darting eyes send arrows flying in Love’s battle. Khajana birds, fish, and lotuses all grow humble before those restless eyes. Like hunters pursuing beauty, they sport among the forest of women’s vine-like bodies.

“O prince, crown of rasikas, knower of all that dwells within the heart: your glance has lodged within my breast. Rasamala pleads—come quickly and draw it out!”

Pada 255

“Raghava, your eyes are filled with magic. Whoever they strike loses all awareness, aches with pain, and falls upon the ground. Filled with beauty, they run in pursuit of beauty, like two warriors rushing together into combat. Poor fish, lotuses, and deer are humbled by them and retreat far away into water and forest.

“They have wearied and wounded countless travelers like me, both inside their homes and outside. Rasamala says: they heed no restraint but remain always lodged within my heart.”

Pada 256

“Raghava, there is no trusting your eyes! Like bees they fly from lotus to lotus, forsaking the proper way of faithful love. Leaving the flowers, they hurry toward the buds, roaming about in shameless misconduct. Having made garlands of jasmine, lotus, and ketaki, they bind others fast in love. Though defeated, they never admit defeat, but still desire victory. Rasamala says: these eyes of yours continually invent new customs of their own.”
