[Root — Chaupai] Kakā: Abandon sensual desire and longing. Awaken from the sleep of worldly longing. [Sujana-prabodhinī Simple Commentary] Meaning—First, by means of the consonant ka, Śrī Rasik Alī Mahārāj instructs: first become desireless (free of every craving). That is, keep no longing or wish for any object in the world. To entertain any craving for worldly objects is itself to sleep. Therefore awaken from sleep, for when you awaken from sleep, ‘then you will be able to do nothing’—the literal wording of this witness. You should also understand what worldly sense-objects are, because if you do not understand their nature, how can you renounce them without understanding, without knowledge? ‘There can be no taking up or renouncing without recognition.’ Worldly sense-objects are seeing, hearing, speaking, smelling, touching, and taking hold of the many kinds of things in the world. These five objects are of two kinds: worldly and otherworldly. Those suffused with Bhagavān and his devotees—those through which devotee and Lord come into association—are otherworldly and belong to the realm beyond. Any object bereft of association with Bhagavān and the devotee is worldly and belongs to this world. Attachment to worldly things leads to a lower state, while attachment to otherworldly things leads to a higher state. By seeing visions of Bhagavān and his devotees with the eyes, hearing words filled with devotee and Lord with the ears, uttering words filled with Bhagavān and the devotee with the tongue, smelling sacred fragrances connected with devotee and Lord through the nose, and receiving the touch of Bhagavān and the devotee through the skin, one gains nearness to Śrī Prabhu. Attachment to objects devoid of this association with Bhagavān and his devotees leads to the hell that is profound suffering.
