Fresh English translation

Know the seeker of liberation by the clear marks of detachment: sweet in disposition, devoted to the Supreme Lord’s feet, and leaving the ocean of the world behind. Forgetting the desire for pleasure in either world, the seeker maintains firm disillusionment without despondency and lovingly serves the revered guru’s lotus feet under an unbroken discipline of affection. Understand two kinds among such seekers: one established in devotion and the other wholly surrendered. Hear the marks of the devotionally steadfast and drink the nectar while reflecting on these qualities within your own heart. Such a person distinguishes essence from non-essence, abandons everything prohibited, and faithfully performs prescribed action despite weariness. Filled with feeling, the seeker understands the proper mood of worship. Having put aside the many contrary doctrines, the pure mind rests upon knowledge and continually increases its single-flavoured love, rejoicing whenever it beholds Sītā and Rāma. It exhausts all its destined karma without the least disturbance in the heart. Let it remain continually adorned by the company of saints and flow within the pure treasure of their excellent words. The wise do not associate with those lost amid worldly desires; lustful company produces the stain of corruption, so they forget such companionship. Leaving inner dejection aside, the seeker passes through all enjoyments assigned by past action. After some interval it reaches the blissful feet, the treasure-house of joy. Maintaining intelligence and patience and holding faith in the chosen Lord, it boils away the impurities of action and arrives near the Beloved’s city. Now hear the second, supremely surrendered form and its incomparable, rasa-filled disposition. It yearns to meet Sītā and Rāma and cannot lightly endure the burden of material nature. Even a moment’s delay is painful; the heart longs, sighs, and sings their virtues. It remains intent upon the beautiful glance of the guru’s grace and is free of other attractions. It rightly distinguishes the three realities, fixes the highest human aim in its heart, and learns from the guru the three secret meanings that give joy and dispel delusion.
