Abhanga 785Devotion to Vitthal

Life under the Influence of Religion

English Translation · I.P. 785

IT is hard to express what divine knowledge is; whence can we obtain inner experience of it ? The pleasure of worship leads us to renounce the world; even the ignorant hear thy praises with awakened interest. I cannot listen to other means; thy song alone I hear and sing with delight. There is peace in resorting to the forest; I am mad with desire for Hari’s worship. What agent of Death has any power over us, when all day long we are rapt in this blessed meditation ? Tuka says, We shall be like children playing at a dinner party, like simple children dividing up their food.

Tr. J. Nelson Fraser & K.B. Marathe (1909)
