If what you repaired is ruined by my ruining it, then—blessed Lord—leave aside what the Veda says: what will the world say? If the Lord’s indifference joins the servant’s powerful sin, then in both ways, Friend of the Lowly, this lowly one will burn in sorrow. (1) I have placed the thunderbolt upon my chest, while the Kali age has taken and crushed me; I endure torment, for who under another’s control would not? Compassionate One, your splendid roll of honor will stand only if you protect me. At the end, when you see my condition, your heart will not remain like this. (2) Ritualists, the righteous, holy people, servants, and those devoted to renunciation will each obtain some place by their own good. But if you turn your face away, who will accept cowardly, unworthy, cruel people like me—fallen and utterly helpless? (3) With time, everyone’s condition changes, Compassionate One; yet apart from you no one will ever desire me. Rāma, I swear by you and say with speech, action, and heart: Tulsi will endure only if the Lord sustains him. (4)
