ऐसेहि जनम-समूह सिराने। प्राननाथ रघुनाथ-से प्रभु तजि सेवत चरन बिराने॥ १॥ जे जड़ जीव कुटिल, कायर, खल, केवल कलिमल-साने। सूखत बदन प्रसंसत तिन्ह कहँ, हरितें अधिक करि माने॥ २॥ सुख हित कोटि उपाय निरंतर करत न पाय पिराने। सदा मलीन पंथके जल ज्यों, कबहुँ न हृदय थिराने॥ ३॥ यह दीनता दूर करिबेको अमित जतन उर आने। तुलसी चित-चिंता न मिटै बिनु चिंतामनि पहिचाने॥ ४॥

Thus have hosts of births passed. Abandoning a Lord like Raghunātha, the Lord of my life, I went on serving the feet of others. (1) Those dull beings who are crooked, cowardly, vile, and stained only with Kali’s filth—I dried my mouth praising them and regarded them as greater than Hari. (2) For the sake of happiness I ceaselessly pursued millions of expedients, yet my feet never grew tired. My heart always remained polluted like water on a road and never became steady. (3) Countless efforts to remove this wretchedness arose in my heart. Tulsi, the mind’s anxiety cannot cease without recognizing the wish-fulfilling jewel. (4)
