Whom else have I, and to whom shall I speak? My heart’s desire is like a pauper’s desire for kingship; to whom can I tell it and obtain joy? (1) I have endured the torments of Yama and the crises of many births, and shall endure them still. The four fruits are inaccessible to me and easy for you, Lord, yet I do not desire them. (2) Rama, I wish to remain yours as a plaything—a bird, an animal, a tree, or a pebble. Through that bond even hell is joy; without it, even in the supreme state I shall burn with sorrow. (3) This alone is the longing in your servant’s heart: even as I speak, I grasp your sandal. Either give your word, or resolve in your heart, ‘I shall uphold Tulsi’s vow.’ (4)
